Part 4: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The phone almost slipped from my hand.

My uncle Adrian.

The one person my father trusted.

The one person who always told us to be careful.

The one person who warned us that money attracted predators.

His voice sounded different now.

Not confident.

Not protective.

Terrified.

“Uncle?”

I could barely speak.

“What happened?”

There was heavy breathing on the other end.

Then silence.

Too long.

“Adrian?”

Finally, he answered.

“Mara… listen to me carefully.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?”

“I don’t have much time.”

The words made my stomach drop.

“What do you mean?”

Another pause.

Then:

“Raymond didn’t escape.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“He was released.”

The room froze.

Detective Harper immediately stepped closer.

“Put him on speaker.”

I did.

Adrian’s voice filled the room.

“Who is there?”

“Police,” Detective Harper said.

A shaky breath.

“Good.”

“Then maybe we still have a chance.”

I stared at the phone.

“What are you talking about?”

Adrian was silent.

Then he said the sentence that made my world collapse again.

“Raymond was never the person your father was investigating.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“He was a messenger.”

A pause.

“A tool.”

My throat tightened.

“Then who?”

No answer.

I felt fear rise.

“Uncle, tell me.”

His voice dropped.

“The person who planned everything…”

“Was someone close to you.”

Everyone looked at my mother.

Because that was where our minds went.

The easiest answer.

The most painful answer.

But Adrian suddenly said:

“Not your mother.”

My breath caught.

My mother looked up.

“What?”

Adrian continued.

“Celeste made mistakes.”

“She was afraid.”

“But she didn’t kill Daniel.”

My mother covered her mouth.

A broken sound escaped her.

Detective Harper grabbed the phone.

“Mr. Cross, I need you to explain.”

Adrian answered quickly.

“Daniel discovered something huge before he died.”

“He found money transfers.”

“Fake companies.”

“Identity records.”

“But the person behind it wasn’t Raymond.”

“Raymond was just hired.”

My skin went cold.

“Who hired him?”

Silence.

Then Adrian said:

“Your father’s business partner.”

I frowned.

“My father didn’t have a partner.”

Adrian’s voice became quiet.

“He thought he didn’t.”

The room felt smaller.

Like the walls were moving closer.

Because every time we thought we found the truth…

Another layer appeared.

Another hidden door.

Another monster.

“Who was it?” I asked.

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Victor Cross.”

My entire body froze.

Cross.

Our family name.

My father’s name.

My name.

I looked at Lily.

She looked just as confused.

“Who is Victor?”

Adrian sighed.

“Your father’s older brother.”

The room went silent.

My father had a brother?

I had never heard of him.

Never seen a picture.

Never even known his name.

“Why didn’t Dad tell us?”

Adrian’s voice softened.

“Because Daniel spent his life trying to erase him from your memory.”

“Why?”

Another pause.

“Because Victor was dangerous.”

I felt sick.

“Dangerous how?”

Adrian answered:

“He believed the family business belonged to him.”

“When your grandfather chose Daniel instead, Victor never forgave him.”

“He disappeared.”

“Changed his name.”

“Built connections.”

“And waited.”

Detective Harper looked serious.

“Mr. Cross.”

“How do you know all of this?”

Silence.

Then Adrian said:

“Because I helped Daniel investigate him.”

My heart sank.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell us?”

His voice broke.

“Because Daniel made me promise.”

“Promise what?”

“To keep you girls safe.”

A bitter laugh.

“I failed.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily whispered:

“Why did Raymond hurt us?”

Adrian answered.

And his words made me sick.

“Because he thought the fear would make you tell him where the evidence was.”

I looked at the floor.

The necklace.

The key.

Everything.

All these years.

He wasn’t hurting us randomly.

He was searching.

My hands shook.

“So he knew?”

“Yes.”

“He knew Dad left something.”

“He knew the trust wasn’t just money.”

“But he didn’t know where Daniel hid the evidence.”

My mind raced.

Then I remembered.

The necklace.

The necklace he took.

“Does he know now?”

Adrian went silent.

Too silent.

“Uncle?”

Finally:

“Yes.”

“How?”

His answer came quietly.

“Because someone told him.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who?”

Another pause.

Then Adrian said:

“The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.”

A noise came from outside the hospital room.

A crash.

Everyone turned.

Security rushed toward the hallway.

Detective Harper immediately pulled her weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

My heart was pounding.

The door slowly opened.

And a man stepped inside.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

A stranger.

But something about his face felt familiar.

He smiled.

And said:

“Hello, Mara.”

I froze.

Because I recognized him.

Not from real life.

From an old photograph.

A photograph of my father’s family.

The missing brother.

Victor Cross.

Alive.

Standing in front of us.

He looked at my mother.

Then at Lily.

Then at me.

And smiled.

“I’ve waited seventeen years to meet my nieces.”

The room went silent.

Detective Harper raised her weapon.

“Don’t move.”

Victor looked amused.

“I’m not here to hurt them.”

He looked at me.

“I’m here to finish what your father started.”

I stepped back.

“You killed him.”

Victor’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“No.”

A pause.

“Your father’s death was an accident.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You expect me to believe that?”

He sighed.

“You don’t know the whole story.”

Then he reached into his coat.

And placed something on the table.

A small silver necklace.

The one Raymond stole.

The one my father gave me.

The one that held the truth.

Victor looked at me.

“Your father didn’t die because he found my secret.”

He whispered:

May you like

“He died because he discovered yours.”

And every person in that room froze.
