Part 7: The Father Who Never Left

Nobody breathed.

At least that was how it felt.

The hospital room became frozen in time.

The message on my phone stayed glowing in my hand.

The picture.

My father.

Standing behind Lily and me.

Smiling.

Alive.

Three years after the world told us we buried him.

Lily grabbed my arm.

“Mara…”

Her voice cracked.

“That’s not possible.”

I looked at her.

I wanted to say she was right.

I wanted to say there had to be an explanation.

A mistake.

A fake photo.

Anything.

But deep down…

Something in me already knew.

Because my father had always been different.

He prepared things.

He left messages.

He created backups.

He hid truth inside ordinary objects.

A man like Daniel Cross didn’t simply disappear.

Detective Harper immediately took my phone.

“Do not touch anything else.”

She studied the image.

“Where did this come from?”

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.”

Adrian looked terrified.

More terrified than when he confessed.

Because this wasn’t about evidence anymore.

This was about someone he thought was gone.

“My brother…”

Victor whispered.

His face had lost all confidence.

“Daniel.”

The door suddenly opened.

A security officer entered.

“Detective, we found something.”

Harper turned.

“What?”

The officer looked at me.

“There was another message sent to her phone.”

My heart stopped.

“What message?”

The officer handed Harper a tablet.

She read silently.

Then her expression changed.

“Read it,” I said.

She hesitated.

Then:

“It says…”

She looked at me.

“Come alone.”

The room went silent.

“No.”

Lily immediately grabbed my hand.

“You’re not going.”

My eyes filled.

For years, I had been the one protecting her.

Now she was trying to protect me.

I squeezed her fingers.

“I’m not leaving you.”

The words came out automatically.

Like when we were little.

Like when we hid under blankets during storms.

Like when we promised each other we would never be separated.

Adrian stepped forward.

“I’ll go.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He deserved my anger.

But not my trust.

Not yet.

He nodded.

“I understand.”

Victor spoke.

“I’ll go.”

Everyone looked at him.

“You?”

He nodded.

“If Daniel is alive…”

His voice lowered.

“Then I need answers.”

The hospital suddenly felt too small.

Too many secrets.

Too many people with hidden histories.

And somewhere out there…

My father.

The man I mourned.

The man I loved.

The man who may have lied to us.

Detective Harper refused to let anyone go alone.

Within minutes, a team was prepared.

The location from the message was tracked.

An abandoned office building outside the city.

One of the old company properties.

A place connected to my grandfather.

Connected to my father.

Connected to everything.

When we arrived, the building looked exactly like the kind of place where secrets were buried.

Broken windows.

Empty halls.

Dust covering everything.

The past trapped inside.

Detective Harper signaled everyone to move carefully.

My heart pounded.

Every step felt heavier.

Because a part of me was terrified.

Not of danger.

Of the truth.

What if my father really was alive?

What if he chose to leave us?

What if everything I believed about him was wrong?

We reached the old conference room.

The door was open.

Inside was a single chair.

And a recording device.

Harper picked it up.

A voice played.

A voice I knew better than my own.

“Mara.”

I stopped breathing.

My father.

Older.

Tired.

But him.

My knees nearly gave out.

“Lily.”

My sister covered her mouth.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

The recording continued.

“If you’re hearing this…”

A pause.

“Then I failed to protect you.”

I stepped closer.

The voice continued.

“I know what you think.”

“You think I abandoned you.”

“You think I left.”

My eyes burned.

“But I didn’t.”

A pause.

“I disappeared because someone was trying to kill you.”

Everyone looked at each other.

The recording continued.

“Victor wasn’t the only threat.”

“Raymond wasn’t the only threat.”

“There was someone inside our family.”

My body went cold.

Again.

Another hidden enemy.

“I spent years trying to expose them.”

“But I couldn’t do it while staying near you.”

“I had to become dead.”

My tears fell.

“Dad…”

I whispered.

The recording continued.

“I watched from a distance.”

“I saw you grow up.”

“I saw every birthday.”

“Every school event.”

“Every moment I wasn’t there.”

His voice cracked.

“And that was the hardest punishment I ever received.”

Lily started crying.

Not quietly.

Not like before.

Like a child finally finding the parent she lost.

“Daddy…”

She whispered.

Then my father said something that changed everything.

“The person who hurt you…”

“He wasn’t acting alone.”

A pause.

“He was following orders.”

My heart froze.

The room became silent.

“Raymond was controlled by someone else.”

“Someone who knew about my disappearance.”

“Someone who knew the truth.”

The recording ended.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then the lights turned on.

All of them.

The entire room brightened.

And a voice came from behind us.

“You always were dramatic, Daniel.”

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

Older.

Calm.

Holding a gun.

My blood froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew that face.

The person who had been helping us.

The person who had cried with us.

The person who claimed to want justice.

My heart shattered.

“Mom?”

Celeste stood there.

Her eyes full of tears.

But the gun in her hand was steady.

Everyone froze.

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“I’m sorry, Mara.”

A pause.

“But your father was never the one we needed to fear.”

May you like

Her hand tightened.

“I was.”
