Part 6: The Betrayal of the Man We Trusted

The room went completely silent.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind before something breaks.
I stared at my uncle Adrian.
The man who held my hand at my father’s funeral.
The man who told us we would be safe.
The man who warned us about monsters.
And all this time…
He had been standing beside us as one.
“You.”
My voice barely came out.
Adrian looked at me.
His eyes were filled with something worse than anger.
Shame.
“I never wanted it to become this.”
I laughed.
A broken, empty sound.
“Become this?”
I looked at Lily.
Her face had gone pale.
“She almost died.”
“I almost died.”
“And you’re talking about what it became?”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“No.”
My voice became stronger.
“You don’t know.”
“You weren’t the one waking up every night wondering if you’d survive until morning.”
“You weren’t the one begging someone to believe you.”
“You weren’t the one looking at a door and hoping he wouldn’t open it.”
My words hit him.
And for once…
He had no answer.
Detective Harper kept her weapon aimed.
“Mr. Cross.”
Adrian slowly raised his hands.
“I’m not running.”
“Good.”
“Because I want them to hear.”
He looked at me.
“All of it.”
I shook my head.
“I don’t want your explanation.”
“You owe me the truth.”
He nodded.
“I do.”
He took a slow breath.
“After Daniel died, I promised myself I would protect you.”
My eyes narrowed.
“You failed.”
“Yes.”
The answer was immediate.
That surprised me.
“I failed because I made the same mistake your father made.”
“What mistake?”
He looked at Victor.
Then at my mother.
Then back at me.
“I thought controlling the danger was the same as stopping it.”
Adrian continued.
“Your father discovered the company’s hidden structure.”
“The money.”
“The accounts.”
“The people involved.”
“But he also discovered something worse.”
I waited.
“He discovered Raymond had already entered your lives.”
My stomach tightened.
“How?”
“Raymond didn’t meet your mother by chance.”
“He studied your family.”
“He knew about the trust.”
“He knew about the inheritance.”
“He knew about you and Lily.”
Lily’s fingers tightened around mine.
“So he married Mom for money?”
Adrian looked at her.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“But there was more.”
My heart sank.
“What?”
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“He wanted the evidence your father hid.”
The necklace.
The recordings.
The truth.
Everything.
I looked at Victor.
“And you?”
Victor looked away.
“I spent years chasing the same evidence.”
My anger rose.
“So everyone was hunting us?”
“No.”
Victor shook his head.
“Not everyone.”
He looked at my mother.
“She was trying to protect you.”
My mother cried silently.
“I should have told them.”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
“But you were afraid.”
She whispered:
“I lost Daniel.”
“I couldn’t lose them too.”
For a moment…
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the tragedy.
Everyone claimed they were protecting us.
Everyone believed their choices were justified.
And meanwhile…
We were the ones suffering.
I turned back to Adrian.
“Why Raymond?”
He looked down.
“Because I needed someone close enough to find the evidence.”
My blood ran cold.
“You used him.”
“Yes.”
“And when he started hurting us?”
Adrian’s face changed.
Pain.
“I tried to stop him.”
I stared.
“When?”
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You didn’t.”
His silence confirmed it.
“You watched.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
My voice cracked.
“You watched because you cared more about the evidence than us.”
Adrian looked like I had hit him.
Because I had.
Not physically.
But deeper.
“I thought I could control him.”
He whispered.
“I thought I could get the truth and remove him.”
A pause.
“But Raymond enjoyed it.”
His jaw tightened.
“I realized too late.”
Lily looked at him.
“Too late?”
Her voice was quiet.
“You always say that.”
She wiped tears from her face.
“Adults always say too late.”
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
Then something unexpected happened.
Victor stepped forward.
Everyone turned.
He looked at Adrian.
“You are not the only one who failed.”
Adrian looked at him.
Victor continued.
“Daniel knew.”
My head snapped toward him.
“What?”
Victor looked at me.
“Your father knew Adrian was hiding things.”
My heart broke again.
“Dad knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he trust him?”
Victor answered softly:
“Because Daniel believed people could still choose better.”
I remembered the letter.
My father’s words.
Do not inherit our fear.
He knew.
He knew everyone was damaged.
Everyone was carrying something.
But he still believed choices mattered.
Suddenly, the hospital lights flickered.
Everyone looked up.
The security alarm sounded.
Again.
But this time…
It wasn’t a warning.
It was an evacuation signal.
Detective Harper looked at her radio.
Her face changed.
“What is it?”
The officer outside answered.
Then Harper went pale.
“What?”
She turned toward us.
“Raymond is not the only person who escaped.”
My stomach dropped.
“Who else?”
She hesitated.
Then:
“Someone accessed the evidence room.”
“Someone took the files.”
Victor immediately looked at Adrian.
“No.”
Adrian frowned.
“I didn’t.”
Victor stepped closer.
“You said you came alone.”
“I did.”
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone froze.
I stared at the screen.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
You’re looking for the wrong monster.
Then another message came.
A picture.
My blood turned cold.
Because the photo showed Lily and me as children.
With one person standing behind us.
Smiling.
A person I recognized.
A person who had been missing from our lives for seventeen years.
My father.
But the date on the photo was impossible.
Because it was taken…
Three years after he supposedly died.
My hands began shaking.
“No…”
Everyone looked at me.
“What is it?” Lily asked.
I couldn’t speak.
I showed them the phone.
And Adrian whispered:
“That’s impossible.”
Victor stared at the image.
May you like
Then said the words nobody wanted to hear.
“Daniel Cross is alive.”
