PART 3 — THE PERSON WHO LEFT THE DOCUMENTS

PART 3 — THE PERSON WHO LEFT THE DOCUMENTS

The phone stayed pressed against my ear even after the call ended.

I waited.

A second.

Two.

Five.

Maybe the man would call back.

Maybe there would be an explanation.

Maybe this was some kind of mistake.

But the screen stayed dark.

No second call.

No message.

Nothing.

Just silence.

And that silence felt worse.

Because it meant whoever had called me wasn’t trying to scare me.

They had delivered a warning.

Then disappeared.

I looked at Emily.

She was still standing beside the altar.

But she no longer looked like the woman I had planned to marry.

She looked like someone who had been caught in the middle of a storm.

“Who was that?”

My question was quiet.

But everyone still nearby heard it.

Emily looked away.

“Daniel…”

“Who was he?”

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

I stared at her.

And for the first time since I met her…

I knew she was lying.

“Don’t lie to me.”

My voice wasn’t angry.

That scared her more.

Because anger can be dismissed.

Anger can be called emotional.

But certainty?

Certainty is harder to fight.

“I’m not lying.”

“You recognized his voice.”

A pause.

Only a second.

But enough.

“I didn’t.”

“You did.”

She looked at me.

And I saw something I hadn’t seen before.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not the fear of losing a wedding.

Not the fear of being exposed.

The fear of someone else.

Someone outside this conversation.

“Daniel, you need to take Lily and leave.”

The words shocked me.

“What?”

“Take her and go.”

“Why?”

She looked around.

Checking who was still listening.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Because you don’t understand what’s happening.”

I stepped closer.

“Then explain it.”

She shook her head.

“I can’t.”

“You can’t?”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“You were about to marry me.”

“I know.”

“You were about to become part of my daughter’s life.”

“I know.”

“Then why can’t you tell me the truth?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because if I do…”

She whispered:

“Someone gets hurt.”

Before I could answer, Marcus walked over.

“Daniel.”

He looked at Emily.

Then at me.

“Police are on the way.”

Emily’s face changed.

“Why?”

Marcus didn’t hesitate.

“Because there are financial documents involving someone’s private information, and because a child was involved.”

Emily looked at me.

“You called the police?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I didn’t.”

The truth was…

I hadn’t even thought about it.

Not until Marcus mentioned it.

Because part of me was still trying to understand.

Still trying to find a version of reality where this wasn’t what it looked like.

The police arrived fifteen minutes later.

Two officers.

A detective.

Questions.

Forms.

The normal process.

But nothing about my life felt normal anymore.

The detective introduced himself as Detective Harris.

He looked through the documents carefully.

Then he looked at me.

“These are detailed.”

“What does that mean?”

He tapped the papers.

“Someone didn’t make these overnight.”

A pause.

“They’ve been preparing.”

The words hit.

Preparing.

Not planning.

Preparing.

Meaning this started long before today.

I looked at Emily.

She sat quietly.

Her wedding dress no longer looked beautiful.

It looked like a costume.

A disguise.

“Ms. Reynolds.”

The detective turned to Emily.

“I need to ask you some questions.”

She nodded.

“I understand.”

“Do you deny creating these documents?”

She hesitated.

Then:

“No.”

The answer surprised everyone.

Even me.

“You admit it?”

Emily looked down.

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

“Why?”

She didn’t answer.

The detective repeated:

“Why were you collecting information about Mr. Carter’s assets before your marriage?”

Emily’s hands trembled.

Then she said:

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

She looked at me.

And her answer changed everything.

“Losing Lily.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Emily looked at my daughter.

“I wasn’t trying to take your money.”

I stared.

“Then what were you doing?”

She closed her eyes.

“I was trying to protect her.”

Nobody spoke.

Because that wasn’t the answer anyone expected.

The detective frowned.

“Protect her from who?”

Emily didn’t answer.

She looked at me.

“I should have told you.”

“Told me what?”

She took a breath.

Then whispered:

“Your daughter was being watched.”

A chill moved through me.

“What are you talking about?”

“After your wife died…”

She paused.

“I started looking into Lily’s background.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because something didn’t make sense.”

“What?”

Emily looked at me.

“Your wife’s death.”

The words felt like a punch.

“Don’t.”

My voice was low.

“Don’t bring her into this unless you know what you’re saying.”

Emily nodded.

“I know.”

“How?”

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out a small envelope.

And handed it to the detective.

“I found this six months ago.”

The detective opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A letter.

And a copy of an old report.

My hands went cold.

Because the report was about my wife.

Five years earlier.

The night everything changed.

The night I lost her.

The report said:

Possible external involvement.

I stared.

“What is this?”

Emily looked broken.

“The accident wasn’t random.”

The room disappeared.

The sounds disappeared.

Everything narrowed to her words.

“No.”

“I didn’t know at first.”

She continued.

“I met someone who had information.”

“Who?”

She looked toward the window.

Like she expected someone to be there.

Then:

“The man who called you.”

My blood ran cold.

“You know him.”

Emily nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

She didn’t answer.

Because before she could…

The lights in the backyard went out.

All of them.

One by one.

The guests screamed.

Someone dropped a glass.

The officers immediately moved.

“Everyone stay calm!”

But Emily wasn’t looking at the darkness.

She was looking at me.

And she whispered:

“He found us.”

The detective moved Lily behind him.

I stepped closer to Emily.

“Who?”

She looked terrified.

Then she said the words that made my entire body freeze.

“The man who destroyed my family.”

A pause.

“The same man who destroyed yours.”

The darkness outside remained.

Silent.

Waiting.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message.

Unknown number.

One sentence:

Ask Emily why she really chose you.

I looked up.

Emily saw the message.

And she started crying.

May you like

Because she knew exactly who sent it.
