PART 6 — THE VIDEO MY WIFE LEFT BEHIND

PART 6 — THE VIDEO MY WIFE LEFT BEHIND

Nobody touched the laptop.

Not immediately.

The screen glowed in the dark room.

A single file.

A single message.

A single reminder that my wife had known something terrible was coming.

FOR DANIEL — WHEN THE TRUTH COMES OUT

The words felt impossible.

Because she had written them.

She had prepared them.

She had expected a day when I would sit here without her.

A day when Lily and I would need answers.

And somehow…

That day had arrived.

“Play it.”

Emily’s voice was quiet.

I looked at her.

“You knew about this?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Then how did you know what it was?”

Her eyes moved to the screen.

“Because your wife contacted me.”

That stopped me.

“What?”

Emily looked broken.

“Before she died.”

The room became silent.

“My wife contacted you?”

She nodded.

“She knew my father had been investigating the same people.”

My mind struggled to process everything.

“You knew her before you met me.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“No.”

The honesty hurt.

But I needed it.

I needed every ugly piece.

Because half-truths had already destroyed enough.

I turned back to the laptop.

“Play it.”

The video opened.

For a few seconds, there was only darkness.

Then the screen changed.

And there she was.

My wife.

Five years younger.

Sitting in the same kitchen where Lily and I had eaten breakfast every morning.

The sight of her destroyed me.

I forgot how much I missed her voice.

Her expressions.

The way she looked when she was thinking.

She looked tired.

Afraid.

But she was smiling.

Like she was trying to be strong.

“Daniel.”

My breath stopped.

Her voice filled the room.

“If you’re watching this…”

She paused.

Then smiled sadly.

“Then I didn’t get the chance to explain.”

My eyes burned.

Lily sat beside me.

Watching her mother on the screen.

A mother she barely remembered.

“I need you to listen carefully.”

My wife continued.

“This isn’t about money.”

A pause.

“It isn’t about the company.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“It’s about someone who has been hiding from you.”

I frowned.

Someone.

Not something.

Someone.

“I found out the truth about my investigation.”

She took a breath.

“The missing money was only the beginning.”

The video flickered.

“My father’s records showed that someone inside the organization was moving money through fake accounts.”

Organization.

The word felt familiar.

Thomas.

Emily.

Everyone kept using that word.

“What organization?” I whispered.

The video continued.

“I traced the transactions.”

A pause.

“And they led back to someone I never expected.”

My heart started beating faster.

My wife looked down.

“Someone in your family.”

I froze.

Emily looked at me.

Neither of us moved.

My wife continued.

“Daniel, I know you trust this person.”

A pause.

“That’s why I’m afraid.”

The room felt colder.

“Because they know you.”

“Your habits.”

“Your weaknesses.”

“Your heart.”

My hands tightened.

Who?

Who could she mean?

Then she said:

“Your brother.”

The world stopped.

Again.

I looked at Emily.

“You said I had a brother.”

She nodded.

But her eyes were on the screen.

The video continued.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.”

My wife’s voice cracked.

“Because your parents spent your entire life hiding him.”

I felt dizzy.

My parents.

My family.

More secrets.

“His name is Adam.”

The name appeared in the air.

Adam.

Not Samuel.

Not a stranger.

Another person.

Another hidden piece of my life.

“He was your older half-brother.”

My stomach dropped.

Half-brother.

A person who existed before me.

A person I never knew.

“Your father loved him.”

My wife continued.

“But after a family scandal, they erased him from every record.”

I stared.

“Erased?”

The video showed old documents.

Birth records.

Photos.

A young man.

My father standing beside him.

My mother nowhere.

“Adam disappeared.”

My wife said.

“Everyone believed he left.”

A pause.

“But he didn’t.”

The video froze briefly.

Then:

“He was forced out.”

Emily spoke quietly.

“Your father hid him because Adam knew too much.”

I turned.

“About what?”

She looked at the screen.

“About Thomas.”

The name again.

The center of everything.

The shadow behind every secret.

The video continued.

“My wife’s voice filled the room.

“Adam found proof that Thomas wasn’t working alone.”

My heart raced.

“With who?”

My wife looked into the camera.

And said:

“The person protecting him.”

A pause.

“The person with access to everything.”

The video cut.

For five seconds, there was only static.

Then a final recording appeared.

My wife looked different.

More frightened.

Like this was recorded later.

Much later.

“Daniel…”

She whispered.

“If something happens to me…”

She looked toward the camera.

“Do not trust anyone completely.”

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like goodbye.

“Not even the person who claims to love you.”

Emily lowered her head.

I felt anger rise.

But before I could speak…

My wife said something else.

Something that made me forget everything.

“Because the person closest to you already knows where the evidence is.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

The laptop screen went black.

The silence afterward felt unbearable.

Finally, I looked at Emily.

“Did you know?”

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Emily.”

She cried.

“Yes.”

The word hit.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you still came into my life.”

“I was trying to stop it.”

“By lying to me?”

She looked down.

“I didn’t know how.”

I stood.

My chair moved sharply.

Lily jumped.

I immediately softened.

“Sorry.”

I looked at my daughter.

Then back at Emily.

“Who knew?”

She hesitated.

“About Adam?”

“No.”

My voice lowered.

“About everything.”

Emily whispered:

“Someone inside your family.”

A pause.

“Someone who has been watching you.”

The house suddenly felt different.

Not safe anymore.

Not ours.

A place full of hidden corners.

Hidden truths.

Hidden people.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone froze.

Because nobody had heard a knock.

Nobody had invited anyone.

Slow footsteps moved through the hallway.

Emily’s face went pale.

“No.”

I stood in front of Lily.

“Who is that?”

She whispered:

“The person your wife warned you about.”

The footsteps stopped.

A voice came from the hallway.

A voice I recognized.

Someone I had known for years.

Someone who had comforted me after my wife died.

Someone who had held Lily when she cried.

The voice said:

“Daniel.”

A pause.

“I think it’s time we stop pretending.”

My blood turned cold.

Because the person standing outside the room…

Was the last person I expected.

May you like

My own mother.
