PART 4 — THE LIE INSIDE THE LIE

PART 4 — THE LIE INSIDE THE LIE
The message remained on my screen.
Ask Emily why she really chose you.
Five words.
Simple.
But they felt heavier than any accusation I had heard that night.
Because they didn’t say:
Ask her what she did.
Ask her what she planned.
They asked:
Why did she choose you?
And suddenly the question I had avoided for years came back.
Why me?
Why did someone like Emily enter my life after five years of grief?
Why did she appear exactly when Lily and I were finally learning how to move forward?
Why did she understand my pain so quickly?
Too quickly.
I looked at her.
“Answer it.”
Emily wiped her tears.
“Daniel…”
“Answer the question.”
The officers stood nearby.
Marcus watched silently.
Everyone was waiting.
But Emily looked like she was fighting with herself.
Like she had spent years carrying something she never wanted to say.
Finally…
She whispered:
“I didn’t meet you by accident.”
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because somewhere inside me…
I already knew.
But hearing it made it real.
The backyard was still dark.
The power hadn’t returned.
Only the emergency lights from the house created a faint glow.
Emily stood in the center of everything.
Still wearing the wedding dress.
Still looking like the woman I loved.
But now I saw the cracks.
“I was looking for you.”
My chest tightened.
“For what?”
She looked down.
“For answers.”
The answer hurt.
Not because it was unexpected.
Because it confirmed my fear.
The relationship.
The dates.
The memories.
The nights talking until sunrise.
Was any of it real?
“Were you investigating me?”
“No.”
She answered quickly.
Then stopped.
“Not at first.”
That hurt more.
The detective stepped forward.
“Ms. Reynolds, you need to explain everything.”
Emily nodded.
“I will.”
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“Five years ago, I lost my father.”
I didn’t know that.
She had never talked about him.
She always said her family was complicated.
“My father worked with Daniel’s wife.”
I froze.
“My wife?”
Emily nodded.
“She was his accountant.”
I stared.
“No.”
“Yes.”
I shook my head.
“My wife never told me that.”
“I know.”
The words came softly.
Because she understood.
She understood how much that hurt.
“My father discovered something.”
Emily continued.
“Something involving money.”
The detective listened carefully.
“What kind of money?”
“Millions.”
A pause.
“Money that disappeared from several accounts.”
I felt cold.
My wife.
An accountant.
Missing money.
But my wife had never been accused of anything.
Never investigated.
Never mentioned.
“Why didn’t anyone know?”
Emily looked at me.
“Because she was blamed.”
The world stopped.
“What?”
“She found the problem.”
Emily’s voice shook.
“She was going to expose it.”
My breathing became heavier.
“And?”
Emily looked away.
“She died before she could.”
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly the story I had lived with for five years changed.
The accident.
The loss.
The grief.
Everything had a shadow behind it.
“Who was responsible?”
Emily didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
The detective asked:
“Was it the person who sent the message?”
Emily nodded.
“Yes.”
“Name?”
She looked terrified.
Then:
“Thomas Vale.”
The detective’s expression changed.
He recognized the name.
That scared me.
“You know him?”
The detective nodded slowly.
“He disappeared years ago.”
Emily looked at him.
“He didn’t disappear.”
A pause.
“He went underground.”
I looked at Emily.
“So you came into my life because of him.”
She didn’t deny it.
And that was the part that hurt most.
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“Then everything was fake.”
Her eyes filled.
“No.”
“How can you say that?”
“Because I didn’t expect to love you.”
The honesty made it worse.
Because it sounded real.
“I was supposed to get close to you.”
She looked at Lily.
“I was supposed to find evidence.”
“And instead?”
She swallowed.
“I found a family.”
The words should have comforted me.
They didn’t.
Because love built on a lie still leaves damage.
“You had documents prepared.”
“Yes.”
“You were tracking my finances.”
“Yes.”
“You hid everything from me.”
Her silence answered.
“Yes.”
I nodded slowly.
“Then why should I believe anything?”
Emily started crying.
“You shouldn’t.”
That surprised me.
She looked at me.
“I know how this looks.”
A pause.
“And I know what I did was wrong.”
The detective watched her carefully.
“Then why didn’t you leave?”
Emily looked at Lily.
“Because of her.”
My daughter.
Lily stood quietly beside the officer.
Watching.
Confused.
Afraid.
Emily’s voice broke.
“She reminded me of my little sister.”
I frowned.
“What?”
Emily wiped her face.
“My sister was eight when Thomas Vale destroyed my family.”
Silence.
“He used her.”
The words came out painfully.
“She knew something she wasn’t supposed to know.”
My stomach tightened.
“And what happened?”
Emily looked at the ground.
“She disappeared.”
A cold silence.
“She was never found.”
Everything clicked.
Her obsession.
Her fear.
Her need to protect Lily.
The documents.
The secrets.
She wasn’t only after money.
She was chasing a ghost.
Trying to prevent history from repeating.
But she still lied.
And Lily still suffered.
That mattered.
A sound came from the gate.
Everyone turned.
A car.
Slowly entering the driveway.
The detective immediately raised his hand.
“Everyone inside.”
The officers moved.
The headlights stopped.
The driver’s door opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Calm.
Confident.
The kind of person who didn’t need to raise his voice.
Because he expected the world to listen.
Emily went completely pale.
“No.”
I looked at her.
“Is that him?”
She nodded.
Her voice barely existed.
“Thomas.”
The man walked toward us.
No weapon.
No panic.
Just a smile.
“Emily.”
She stepped back.
“You should have stayed away.”
Thomas looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Then smiled.
“So this is Daniel Carter.”
I stepped forward.
“What do you want?”
He looked at me like he was studying an object.
“Funny.”
A pause.
“After all these years, everyone keeps asking me the same question.”
He looked toward Emily.
“Your wife asked too.”
My blood froze.
“What did you say?”
Thomas smiled.
“I told her the truth.”
A pause.
“The truth always costs something.”
My hands clenched.
“You killed her.”
He didn’t answer.
But his silence was enough.
Then he said:
“She found something she shouldn’t have.”
The detective stepped forward.
“You’re under arrest.”
Thomas laughed.
Not loudly.
Not nervously.
Just confidently.
Because he knew something we didn’t.
Then he looked at me.
And said:
“You still don’t understand, Daniel.”
A pause.
“Your wife wasn’t the only one who found the documents.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Thomas smiled.
“She left something for you.”
Then he looked at Lily.
“Your daughter found the first part.”
My heart stopped.
“What did you say?”
Thomas took one more step.
“The rest is hidden somewhere only she can find.”
I turned toward Lily.
My daughter looked terrified.
Because she knew something.
Something she hadn’t told me.
And before I could ask…
She whispered:
“Daddy…”
Her voice trembled.
May you like
“Mommy told me never to open the blue box.”
