PART 1 — THE NIGHT SHE RAN INTO THE WRONG CAR

The storm that night did not feel natural.

It felt like the entire sky had been waiting for something terrible to happen.

Rain crashed against the mountainside outside the Vargas estate, turning the private road into a river of mud and darkness. The expensive gardens that usually looked perfect under the mansion lights were now twisted shadows. The fountains overflowed. The flowers bent under the violent wind.

And somewhere in that darkness, Elena Vargas was running for her life.

She had no shoes.

No phone.

No money.

No plan.

Only one thought repeating inside her mind.

Get away.

Her bare feet hit the cold pavement as she stumbled through the rain, her silver evening dress torn at the side, the expensive fabric now nothing more than proof of the nightmare she had escaped from.

Her breathing was uneven.

Her chest burned.

Every few seconds she looked back.

The mansion was getting smaller behind her.

But the voices were still there.

“Elena!”

The sound of her stepmother’s voice cut through the storm.

Not worried.

Not afraid.

Angry.

That was the voice Isabel Vargas used when she believed someone had forgotten their place.

“Come back right now!”

Elena’s body shook.

She knew that tone.

She had known it since she was sixteen years old.

Isabel never begged.

She commanded.

Because in Isabel’s world, people were not loved.

They were controlled.

Elena pushed herself harder.

Her ankle twisted against a rock hidden beneath the water, and pain shot up her leg.

She almost fell.

But she kept moving.

Because stopping meant going back.

And going back meant losing herself forever.

Only an hour earlier, she had been standing in that same mansion wearing a designer dress, surrounded by powerful businessmen, politicians, and wealthy families.

Everyone had smiled at her.

Everyone had called her beautiful.

Everyone had pretended she was there because she mattered.

But Elena knew the truth.

She was not the guest.

She was the payment.

Her stepmother had made sure she understood that.

Earlier that evening, Isabel had stood behind her while adjusting the diamond necklace around her throat.

The necklace was heavy.

Not because of the diamonds.

Because Elena knew what it represented.

A price.

A transaction.

A sacrifice.

“You should smile more,” Isabel had whispered.

Elena looked at her reflection in the mirror.

“I don’t want to be here.”

Isabel’s fingers tightened around the necklace.

“You don’t always get what you want.”

Elena turned around.

“Why did you invite me?”

Isabel smiled.

That smile had always frightened her.

Because Isabel only smiled when she already had a plan.

“Because tonight could save this family.”

Elena frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Isabel walked closer.

Her perfume was expensive.

Her voice was cold.

“Mr. Harrison is interested in investing in Vargas Holdings.”

Elena knew the name.

Everyone did.

A billionaire.

A man twice her age.

A man who collected companies the way others collected watches.

“So?”

Isabel tilted her head.

“So be grateful.”

Elena’s heart sank.

“No.”

The room became silent.

Even the music from downstairs seemed distant.

Isabel stared at her.

“What did you say?”

“I said no.”

For the first time that evening, Isabel looked surprised.

Then disappointed.

“You still don’t understand how the world works.”

Elena stepped back.

“I understand perfectly.”

She touched the necklace.

“You’re trying to trade me.”

The slap came so fast she barely saw it.

The ring on Isabel’s finger cut her cheek.

Elena fell against the table.

For a moment, she couldn’t hear anything.

Only the ringing in her ears.

Isabel leaned down.

Her voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

“You have lived in my house.”

“You have eaten my food.”

“You have worn my clothes.”

“You owe me.”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was your husband’s daughter.”

Isabel’s expression hardened.

“That man is dead.”

The words hurt more than the slap.

Because Elena knew Isabel had never seen her as family.

Not really.

She was a responsibility.

A burden.

Something that could eventually become useful.

And tonight, Isabel had decided her usefulness was her body.

The bedroom door slammed shut.

Elena spun around.

The sound of the lock turning made her blood freeze.

“No…”

She ran to the door.

“Isabel!”

No answer.

Only footsteps moving away.

Then another voice.

A man.

Older.

Closer.

Elena backed away.

Her eyes searched the room.

The balcony was too high.

The door was locked.

The windows were sealed.

Then she saw it.

The bathroom window.

Half open.

Rain blew inside.

For one second, she hesitated.

It was dangerous.

It was high.

She could fall.

But then she heard the bedroom handle moving.

Someone was coming.

Elena climbed.

She did not think.

She did not cry.

She only moved.

Her hands slipped against the wet glass.

Her dress caught on the edge.

But she forced herself through.

And then she jumped.

The fall wasn’t far.

But it was enough.

She landed in the garden bushes below, pain exploding through her body.

She lay there for a moment.

Unable to breathe.

Then she heard the door above open.

A man’s voice.

“Where is she?”

And Isabel answered calmly.

“Find her.”

Elena covered her mouth.

The rain washed over her face.

She crawled away.

Away from the mansion.

Away from the people who claimed to love her.

Away from the life she had known.

Until she reached the road.

And that was when headlights appeared.

A black luxury vehicle moved through the storm.

Elena stepped directly in front of it.

The car braked violently.

The tires screamed.

The vehicle stopped inches away from her.

For a moment, everything was silent.

Then Elena ran to the passenger window.

She hit the glass with shaking hands.

“Please…”

Her voice broke.

“Please help me.”

Inside the car sat a man who looked completely untouched by the chaos outside.

His name was Matthew Carranza.

A man whose reputation made powerful people nervous.

A man who never involved himself in other people’s problems.

His dark suit was perfectly pressed.

His expression was unreadable.

Until he saw her face.

The bruise.

The fear.

The desperation.

And something in him changed.

“Open the door,” he said.

The driver immediately unlocked it.

Elena fell into the back seat.

The warmth hit her instantly.

She wrapped her arms around herself, shaking uncontrollably.

Matthew removed his coat and placed it over her shoulders.

“Who did this to you?”

For a few seconds, Elena said nothing.

Because saying it out loud made it real.

Then she whispered:

“My stepmother.”

Matthew’s eyes narrowed.

“She tried to give me to a man to save her company.”

The entire car went silent.

Then Elena looked down at his phone screen.

A name was still visible.

A recent call.

The person who had contacted him.

Her blood ran cold.

Because the name was impossible.

Isabel Vargas.

Matthew noticed her expression.

And before Elena could ask the question…

The SUV behind them accelerated.

Fast.

Too fast.

Matthew looked into the mirror.

His voice became colder.

“Get down.”

Elena froze.

“Why?”

Matthew stared at the approaching headlights.

“Because the people chasing you…”

A pause.

“…are not here to bring you home.”

He reached for his phone.

And Elena realized something terrifying.

May you like

The stranger who saved her…

Might already be connected to the woman who destroyed her.
