PART 3 — THE SECRET SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO KNOW

Elena pressed her hand against the car window.

She couldn’t hear everything through the rain.

But she didn’t need to.

She saw Matthew’s face.

For the first time since she met him…

He looked shocked.

Not angry.

Not controlled.

Shocked.

And that scared her more than anything.

Outside, Isabel Vargas stepped closer, her umbrella tilted perfectly above her expensive coat.

She looked exactly the same as she always did.

Elegant.

Powerful.

Untouchable.

The woman who had controlled Elena’s entire life with a smile.

“You should have stayed out of this, Matthew,” Isabel said.

Matthew’s voice was low.

“You’re done.”

Isabel laughed.

“Are you really going to pretend you’re the hero tonight?”

Her eyes moved toward the car.

Toward Elena.

“You know what she is.”

Matthew’s jaw tightened.

“Be careful.”

“No.”

Isabel smiled.

“Tonight she finally deserves the truth.”

Elena’s heart pounded.

The truth?

What truth?

She opened the door slightly.

Matthew immediately turned.

“Elena, stay inside.”

But she was tired.

Tired of being hidden.

Tired of people making decisions about her life while she stood in the dark.

She stepped out into the rain.

“Tell me.”

Both of them looked at her.

The rain soaked through her dress instantly, but she didn’t care.

She looked at Isabel.

“Tell me what you know.”

Isabel’s expression changed.

For the first time, Elena saw something unfamiliar.

Fear.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

But real.

Matthew noticed it too.

“Elena,” he said quietly, “you don’t have to hear this tonight.”

She looked at him.

“You knew.”

Silence.

That was all the answer she needed.

Her eyes filled.

“You knew something about me.”

Matthew looked away.

“I suspected.”

“Suspected what?”

Before he could answer, Isabel interrupted.

“She was never your stepmother’s charity case.”

Her voice was cruel.

“She was never the poor orphan I saved.”

Elena froze.

The word echoed in her head.

Orphan.

She had spent her whole life believing her parents died when she was young.

That Isabel had taken her in.

That she owed her everything.

But now…

Everything felt wrong.

“My parents…” Elena whispered.

Isabel smiled.

“Your mother died.”

A pause.

“But your father didn’t.”

The world went silent.

Elena stared.

“No.”

Her voice barely existed.

“No, that’s impossible.”

“You were told he abandoned you.”

Isabel stepped closer.

“He didn’t.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Matthew.

“Tell me she’s lying.”

Matthew didn’t answer.

And that silence destroyed her.

Because deep down, she knew.

He wasn’t protecting Isabel.

He was protecting Elena from the truth.

“Who was he?” Elena asked.

Her voice broke.

“Who was my father?”

Matthew looked at her.

And for the first time, the powerful billionaire looked like a man carrying an unbearable burden.

“Your father was Daniel Vargas.”

Elena stopped breathing.

The name.

She had seen it before.

Old documents.

Old photographs.

A man she barely remembered.

A man Isabel told her had left.

“He was my father?”

Matthew nodded.

“Yes.”

Elena stepped back.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

No one answered.

The rain fell between them.

Then Matthew finally spoke.

“Because your father was my closest friend.”

Elena stared at him.

“What?”

Matthew’s eyes lowered.

“Daniel saved my life years ago.”

He paused.

“He died trying to expose Isabel’s illegal business dealings.”

Elena felt sick.

“No…”

Isabel’s face hardened.

“Don’t listen to him.”

But Matthew continued.

“Your father discovered Isabel was using innocent people to cover financial crimes.”

Elena looked at Isabel.

The woman who raised her.

The woman who called herself family.

“You killed him?”

Isabel’s face went cold.

“I protected this family.”

Elena felt something inside her break.

“You let me believe I had no one.”

Isabel didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

That was exactly what she did.

A person without family was easier to control.

A person without power was easier to own.

Then one of Isabel’s men suddenly moved forward.

Matthew saw it first.

“Get back!”

The man reached inside his jacket.

Everything happened in seconds.

Matthew grabbed Elena and pulled her behind him.

A loud sound exploded through the rain.

Elena screamed.

The man fell.

But Matthew had been hit.

Not badly.

A bullet grazed his shoulder.

Blood spread across his shirt.

“Matthew!”

He looked at her.

Still calm.

Still standing.

“I’m fine.”

But Elena saw his hand shaking.

Not from pain.

From anger.

The kind of anger that only came when someone threatened what he had decided to protect.

Seconds later, headlights appeared.

More vehicles.

Not Isabel’s.

Matthew’s security team.

The men who stepped out surrounded the road immediately.

Isabel’s confidence disappeared.

For the first time, she looked powerless.

Matthew looked at her.

“You lost.”

But Isabel smiled.

A slow, terrifying smile.

“No, Matthew.”

She glanced at Elena.

“I still have one thing.”

Elena felt cold.

“What?”

Isabel reached into her bag and pulled out an old photograph.

She held it toward Elena.

A photograph of a young woman.

A woman who looked exactly like Elena.

But the person standing beside her…

was someone Elena never expected.

Matthew looked at the photo.

And his face changed.

Because he recognized the woman.

“Impossible,” he whispered.

Elena took the photo.

Her hands trembled.

On the back was one sentence:

“For Elena. When she is old enough to know who her real family is.”

And below it was a name.

A name that turned Matthew pale.

Because it was not Daniel Vargas.

It was:

Olivia Carranza.

Matthew’s sister.

The woman who had died fifteen years ago.

The woman everyone believed had never had children.

Elena looked up.

“Who is Olivia?”

Matthew couldn’t answer.

Because the impossible truth had just appeared.

Elena was not only connected to Isabel.

May you like

She was connected to the Carranza family.

And someone had spent years making sure she never found out.
