Part 2 – The Ring That Changed Everything

Part 2 – The Ring That Changed Everything

The surgeon didn't answer.

He simply turned and walked back through the operating room doors.

For the first time in twenty years...

Every doctor in Mount Sinai understood something terrifying.

Vincent Moretti wasn't threatening them.

He was begging.

Marco waited until the hallway emptied before speaking.

"The fourth attacker is alive."

Vincent didn't move.

"Barely."

"We pulled him out before he bled out."

Silence.

"He refuses to talk."

Vincent's gray eyes never left the operating room.

"He will."

Marco hesitated.

"There is something else."

Vincent finally looked at him.

"The attack wasn't only inside the mansion."

Marco handed him a tablet.

Security footage from the estate filled the screen.

The delivery truck.

The smoke grenades.

The gunmen.

Then...

The east gate.

One of the estate guards opened it himself.

Not under threat.

Not by force.

He entered the access code willingly.

Marco spoke quietly.

"We have a traitor."

Vincent watched the footage three times.

Every frame.

Every movement.

Every hesitation.

The guard wasn't frightened.

He expected the attackers.

Someone inside the Moretti organization had sold his son.

His jaw tightened.

"Lock the estate."

"Already done."

"No one leaves."

"No one enters."

Marco nodded.

"Understood."

"And find every employee who disappeared during the attack."

Six-year-old Matteo slowly woke inside Mrs. Rosa's arms.

His first word wasn't "Daddy."

It wasn't "Hospital."

It wasn't even "Hurts."

It was...

"Lily?"

Vincent crossed the hallway immediately.

He knelt in front of his son.

"She's still fighting."

Matteo's little face crumpled.

"I told her to read one more chapter."

His tiny fingers twisted together.

"Then the windows broke."

Vincent gently brushed his son's hair away from his forehead.

"You didn't do anything wrong."

"I couldn't help her."

"You don't have to."

"I was scared."

"I know."

Matteo looked directly into his father's eyes.

"If Lily dies..."

"...will everyone else leave too?"

The question shattered something inside Vincent.

Because three years earlier...

After Isabella died...

Every nanny had quit.

Every tutor transferred.

Every housekeeper asked for reassignment.

Only Lily stayed.

Not because of the salary.

Because Matteo cried every night.

Meanwhile...

Deep inside the intensive care unit...

Machines breathed for Lily.

The bullet near her spine had narrowly missed permanent paralysis.

Another had torn through her liver.

The third had fractured part of her skull.

Dr. Emily Carter quietly adjusted another blood transfusion.

A younger resident whispered,

"Why is the entire mafia standing outside?"

Dr. Carter didn't even look up.

"Because the woman in this bed..."

"...saved their future."

Five hours later...

A nurse rushed into the waiting area.

"Mr. Moretti?"

Vincent stood instantly.

"She's crashing."

The hallway exploded into motion.

Doctors ran.

Crash carts rolled across polished floors.

The ICU doors slammed shut again.

Through the narrow window...

Vincent saw doctors pressing on Lily's chest.

Another prepared the defibrillator.

"Clear!"

Her body lifted violently.

Nothing.

Again.

"Clear!"

Nothing.

Matteo buried his face against Marco's shoulder.

"No..."

Vincent whispered.

"You promised."

Nobody heard him.

Except himself.

After nine endless minutes...

The heart monitor finally found a rhythm.

Weak.

Unstable.

But alive.

Dr. Carter walked out twenty minutes later, exhausted.

"She's survived the cardiac arrest."

Vincent released a breath he didn't know he had been holding.

"But..."

The doctor continued.

"She remains unconscious."

"There may be brain swelling."

"The next forty-eight hours will determine everything."

That night...

Vincent refused to leave the hospital.

At three o'clock in the morning, he quietly entered Lily's ICU room.

The lights were dim.

Rain tapped softly against the windows.

She looked impossibly small beneath the white blankets.

Bandages covered half her head.

Her right arm rested in a cast.

Machines surrounded her like silent guardians.

Vincent pulled a chair beside the bed.

For several minutes...

He simply watched her breathe.

Then his eyes fell on her left hand.

No rings.

No jewelry.

Nothing except tiny calluses from years of hard work.

He remembered something Mrs. Rosa had once mentioned.

"Lily sends almost all her salary home."

"To who?"

"Her younger sister."

"She says family is the only thing that matters."

Vincent looked down at the gold wedding band still resting on his own finger.

He hadn't removed it since Isabella died.

Three years.

Not once.

Slowly...

He twisted it free.

He held it in his palm for a long time.

Then...

With hands steadier than they had been all day...

He slipped it gently onto Lily's ring finger.

Not as another marriage.

Not as a replacement.

As a promise.

A vow spoken only to himself.

"You protected my son..."

"...while everyone else ran."

His voice was barely audible.

"Until you wake up..."

"...the Moretti family protects you."

Outside the ICU...

Marco saw everything through the glass.

He lowered his head respectfully.

Then his phone vibrated.

An encrypted message.

Only four words.

The traitor is moving.

Marco's face hardened.

He immediately called Vincent.

"Boss."

Vincent stepped into the hallway.

"What happened?"

"We found the money."

"What money?"

"The payment made to the assassin."

Silence.

Marco swallowed.

"It didn't come from another mafia family."

Vincent's gray eyes slowly darkened.

"Then where?"

Marco looked down at the financial records one final time before answering.

"It came..."

"...from a Moretti family account."

The hallway fell completely silent.

Because that meant the man who ordered Lily's murder...

Wasn't outside the family.

May you like

He had been sitting at the Moretti table all along.
