Part 4 – The Woman They Could Not Kill

Darkness swallowed the intensive care unit.
For less than a second.
Then the emergency backup lights flickered red across the ceiling.
Not enough.
Half the corridor remained in shadow.
The heart monitors continued running on battery power, their steady beeping suddenly sounding far too loud.
Every nurse in the ICU froze.
Every trained instinct screamed the same warning.
This wasn't a power failure.
Someone had created darkness on purpose.
Outside Lily's room...
The man wearing hospital scrubs walked calmly down the hallway.
He carried an oxygen cylinder in one hand.
A silenced pistol hidden beneath the blanket draped over it.
His identification badge looked genuine.
His smile looked ordinary.
Only his eyes gave him away.
Cold.
Focused.
Already calculating the distance to Lily's bed.
Two doors away, Marco noticed him first.
Not because of the disguise.
Because the man never looked at the patients.
Real nurses always glanced inside the rooms.
This one counted exits.
Marco quietly touched the pistol beneath his jacket.
Into the microphone hidden in his sleeve, he whispered,
"Code Black."
Immediately, every Moretti bodyguard moved without panic.
They did not draw weapons.
Not yet.
They simply shifted positions.
Closing escape routes.
Inside the room, Matteo still held Lily's hand.
"Daddy?"
Vincent looked toward the hallway.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Mrs. Rosa instinctively stepped in front of Matteo.
Years of working for the Moretti family had taught her one lesson.
When Vincent became this quiet...
Violence was already close.
The fake nurse reached Lily's door.
His hand touched the handle.
Marco spoke one word.
"Stop."
The man smiled.
"I'm changing her oxygen."
Marco's expression never changed.
"No."
"You aren't."
For one heartbeat...
Nobody moved.
Then the assassin dropped the oxygen cylinder.
His pistol appeared as if by magic.
The suppressor coughed twice.
Glass exploded beside Marco's head.
Patients screamed.
Doctors dove behind nurses' stations.
The hallway erupted into chaos.
Vincent reacted before the second shot finished echoing.
He grabbed Matteo with one arm.
Pulled Lily's hospital bed sideways with the other.
The bullet shattered the headboard instead of entering her chest.
Marco fired once.
The assassin rolled behind a medication cart.
Another Moretti guard fell, clutching his shoulder.
The killer wasn't here to escape.
He was here to finish one woman.
"Lily!"
Dr. Emily Carter shouted.
"We have to move her!"
Vincent nodded.
"Go!"
Four nurses unlocked the bed.
They pushed it toward the surgical wing.
The assassin saw them.
Ignoring everyone else...
He sprinted after Lily.
Marco finally understood.
"He's not targeting us."
"No."
Vincent answered grimly.
"He was ordered to make sure she never talks."
The chase tore through the hospital.
Doctors flattened themselves against walls.
Patients cried.
Security alarms screamed overhead.
The assassin fired again.
A bullet struck the metal railing inches from Lily's head.
Dr. Carter never slowed.
"Keep moving!"
Vincent cut through another corridor.
He knew the hospital blueprint.
He reached the intersection seconds before the assassin.
The killer rounded the corner.
Straight into Vincent.
The impact drove both men into the wall.
The pistol skidded across the polished floor.
Neither man reached for it.
Their hands found each other's throats first.
The assassin was younger.
Faster.
Vincent was heavier.
Stronger.
The man drove a knife from his sleeve toward Vincent's ribs.
Vincent trapped his wrist.
Bone cracked.
The knife fell.
The assassin head-butted him hard enough to split his eyebrow.
Blood poured down Vincent's face.
He never loosened his grip.
"You should've stayed dead," the assassin hissed.
Vincent's answer was simple.
"You shot the wrong woman."
He slammed the man's head into the concrete wall once.
Twice.
Three times.
The killer collapsed unconscious.
Alive.
Barely.
Hospital security finally arrived.
Far too late.
Marco handed over the prisoner.
"Federal custody."
The officers nodded immediately.
No arguments.
No delays.
Meanwhile...
Lily's bed rolled safely into a secured operating suite.
The danger had passed.
Or so everyone thought.
Dr. Carter checked Lily's pupils.
Then suddenly frowned.
"Wait..."
The monitors weren't showing distress.
They were showing activity.
Unexpected neurological activity.
Lily's fingers moved again.
More strongly this time.
Her eyelids fluttered.
Slowly...
She focused on the people around her.
The room blurred.
White lights.
Blue gowns.
The smell of antiseptic.
Then she recognized one face.
"Matteo..."
she whispered.
The little boy burst into tears.
"You remembered me!"
A faint smile touched Lily's lips.
"I promised..."
Her voice was weak.
"...I'd finish the dinosaur story."
Even Dr. Carter had to turn away for a moment.
Hours later...
The hospital finally settled into silence again.
Vincent stood beside Lily's bed.
"You nearly died."
She looked at him quietly.
"So did Matteo."
Neither spoke for several moments.
Then Lily noticed the gold ring resting on her finger.
She frowned slightly.
"Sir..."
"I think..."
"...there's been a mistake."
Vincent gently shook his head.
"No."
She looked confused.
"This belonged to Isabella."
His late wife.
Lily immediately tried to remove it.
Vincent carefully stopped her hand.
"It isn't replacing her."
His voice remained calm.
"It represents my promise."
"What promise?"
"That no one will ever hurt you again."
Lily looked away.
"You don't owe me anything."
Vincent's expression softened for the first time in years.
"I owe you everything."
Outside the room...
Marco received another encrypted report.
His eyes widened.
He knocked once before entering.
"Boss."
Vincent looked up.
"What is it?"
Marco placed several photographs on the table.
Security footage.
Financial records.
Passport copies.
One face appeared in every file.
Carlo Moretti.
Vincent's uncle.
Marco spoke quietly.
"We were wrong."
Vincent frowned.
"About what?"
"The attack wasn't meant to kill Matteo."
Silence filled the room.
Marco continued.
"Matteo was only bait."
Vincent's heartbeat slowed.
"Explain."
"The original contract..."
Marco turned over the final page.
"...listed only one target."
Vincent looked down.
His gray eyes hardened.
There, in black ink, was a single name.
Lily Sinclair.
Not Matteo.
Not Vincent.
Lily.
The maid who had worked at the mansion for only eight months.
Vincent slowly raised his eyes.
"Why?"
Marco answered with the only truth they had.
"We don't know."
"But whoever ordered this..."
"...was willing to murder an innocent woman before she ever said a word."
As Lily drifted back to sleep, neither she nor Vincent realized that the answer wasn't hidden in the Moretti family.
It was buried twenty years earlier...

In a forgotten coal-mining town in West Virginia, where a little girl named Lily Sinclair had witnessed something powerful men believed had died with her father.
