Part 3 – The Traitor at the Family Table

Part 3 – The Traitor at the Family Table
The hospital corridor became unnaturally quiet.
Vincent stared at Marco.
"Say that again."
Marco handed him the financial report.
"The transfer came from one of our offshore holding accounts."
Vincent scanned the page once.
Then again.
Every transaction.
Every authorization code.
Every digital signature.
None of them had been forged.
Someone with legitimate access had approved the payment.
Someone Vincent trusted.
"When?"
"Three days ago."
"Amount?"
"Five million dollars."
Vincent's expression never changed.
"Recipient?"
"A shell corporation in Malta."
Marco hesitated.
"We traced it."
"And?"
"It belongs to Dante Russo."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
One of the dead assassins.
The money had reached its destination.
The mission had simply failed.
Because a maid had stepped in front of the bullets.
Across the city...
The only surviving gunman finally regained consciousness.
His wrists were chained to the hospital bed.
Two detectives stood outside.
Three Moretti soldiers stood farther down the hallway.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody smiled.
The man slowly opened his eyes.
The first face he saw...
Was Vincent Moretti.
"You're alive," the assassin whispered.
Vincent pulled up a chair.
"So are you."
"For now."
The assassin laughed weakly.
"You'll kill me."
Vincent shook his head.
"No."
"You're going to tell me who paid you."
Silence.
The assassin looked away.
Vincent calmly placed a photograph on the bed.
It showed Lily.
Still unconscious.
Covered in tubes.
"This woman wasn't your target."
"No."
"My son wasn't your target."
The assassin remained silent.
Vincent leaned closer.
"So why shoot them?"
The man's jaw tightened.
"Collateral."
That single word echoed through the room.
Collateral.
To him...
Lily's life was nothing more than a problem solved with bullets.
Vincent stood.
"You've made your last mistake."
He walked toward the door.
Without turning around, he spoke one sentence.
"Give him to the FBI."
The assassin blinked.
"What?"
Vincent looked over his shoulder.
"If I kill you..."
"You become a martyr."
"If the federal government keeps you alive..."
"You become a witness."
Fear finally entered the assassin's eyes.
Back in the ICU...
A nurse gently adjusted Lily's blanket.
Something slipped from beneath the sheets.
A small cloth pouch.
The nurse picked it up.
Inside...
Thirty-seven dollars.
An old photograph.
And three folded letters.
Each addressed to the same person.
Emma Sinclair
Dr. Emily Carter quietly read the first page.
Not because she meant to.
The letter had already fallen open.
Emma,
I know tuition is expensive.
Don't worry about me.
Eat properly.
I'll work extra shifts.
One day you'll become the teacher Dad always dreamed you'd be.
The doctor stopped reading.
She carefully folded the paper again.
Thirty-seven dollars.
That was everything Lily owned.
The woman protecting the heir to a criminal empire...
Couldn't even afford new shoes.
Meanwhile...
Matteo refused to leave the hospital.
Mrs. Rosa tried everything.
Cartoons.
Ice cream.
Toys.
Nothing worked.
"I stay with Lily."
The old housekeeper finally sighed.
"All right."
She wheeled a little chair beside Lily's bed.
Matteo climbed onto it quietly.
His tiny hand rested against hers.
"Miss Lily?"
No answer.
"I finished the dinosaur book."
Silence.
"I even sounded out the hard words."
His voice became smaller.
"You promised we'd read the next chapter together."
A tear rolled down his cheek.
"I waited."
The heart monitor suddenly changed.
Not dramatically.
Just...
Slightly.
Dr. Carter noticed immediately.
"Did you touch her?"
Matteo looked frightened.
"I only held her hand."
The doctor smiled softly.
"Do it again."
He did.
The monitor steadied.
Lily's heartbeat became stronger.
Dr. Carter quietly wrote one sentence in the chart.
Patient demonstrates measurable neurological response to child's voice.
That evening...
Marco completed interviews with every surviving employee.
One answer kept repeating.
"Lily warned us."
Another.
"She told security to check the delivery truck."
Another.
"She asked why Camera Twelve wasn't working."
Marco frowned.
Camera Twelve.
He requested maintenance records.
Five minutes later...
He found them.
There were none.
The camera hadn't malfunctioned.
Someone had turned it off manually.
Exactly forty-seven minutes before the attack.
Vincent studied the timeline.
The delivery truck.
The disabled camera.
The opened gate.
The coordinated assault.
This wasn't merely betrayal.
It had been planned from inside the mansion.
His phone rang.
The caller ID displayed only one word.
Family.
Vincent answered.
His uncle, Carlo Moretti, spoke first.
"Terrible tragedy."
Vincent remained silent.
Carlo continued.
"I hear the maid may not survive."
Still silence.
Then Carlo sighed.
"You should focus on Matteo."
"The staff can be replaced."
The line went completely quiet.
For several seconds...
Neither man spoke.
Finally Vincent answered.
"No."
Carlo frowned.
"What?"
"My son..."
"...cannot replace her."
Vincent ended the call.
Marco looked up.
"Boss?"
Vincent slowly placed the phone on the table.
"Begin investigating Uncle Carlo."
Marco froze.
"On what grounds?"
Vincent's gray eyes became cold enough to chill the room.
"Because..."
"...he was the only person who sounded disappointed that Lily was still alive."
Just after midnight...
A young ICU nurse hurried into Dr. Carter's office.
"Doctor!"
"What happened?"
"Lily's responding."
The doctor ran into the room.
Lily's fingers had moved.
Only slightly.
But unmistakably.
Matteo gasped.
"Daddy!"
Vincent rushed inside.
Lily's eyelids trembled.
Slowly...
Painfully...
They began to open.
The first face she saw wasn't a doctor.
It wasn't a nurse.
It was six-year-old Matteo smiling through tears.
"You came back..."
he whispered.
Lily tried to smile.
Her lips barely moved.
Then, with enormous effort, she whispered just three words.
"Is everyone..."
She paused to breathe.
"...still alive?"
Before anyone could answer—
Every monitor in the ICU suddenly erupted in alarms.
Not because Lily was dying.
Because someone had just disconnected the hospital's emergency power system.
The lights went out.
And in the darkness outside her room...
A shadow carrying a silenced pistol stepped into the hallway.
May you like
The traitor had come to finish the job himself.
