Chapter 3 - The Broken Lock

The swing doors flew open with a violence that sent a rack of hanging aluminum trays clattering to the floor.

Lorenzo entered the kitchen first, pulling Isabella behind him like a piece of luggage. Three of his personal bodyguards stormed in behind them, their heavy handguns drawn and held low against their legs.

Elvira ran ahead of them, her black serving shoes skidding on the wet tile as she pointed toward the far end of the service corridor.

"There!" she shouted, her voice echoing off the high steel walls. "The walk-in freezer!"

Lorenzo reached the heavy steel door in three strides. He saw the thick brass padlock secured through the external latch, the frost creeping around the edges of the frame, and the digital thermometer reading minus twelve degrees.

His face turned grey.

He turned toward Isabella. "The key."

Isabella backed away, her hands trembling as she pulled her leather clutch closer to her chest. "Lorenzo, listen to me! It’s a mistake! They were playing! I didn't know the lock was—"

Lorenzo didn't waste time talking. He lunged forward, ripped the clutch from her hands, and tore the seam open with his bare fingers. Lipstick, compact powder, and a diamond compact spilled onto the dirty tile floor—along with a small, brass Yale padlock key.

He grabbed the key, jammed it into the padlock, and twisted.

CLICK.

He tore the padlock free, threw it against the wall, and yanked the massive steel door open with a roar of escaping white fog.

A wave of freezing air, smelling of ice and flash-frozen meat, rolled out into the warm kitchen.

"Leo! Mia!" Lorenzo dropped to his knees, plunging his bare hands into the dense cloud of vapor.

Inside, curled on the frost-covered concrete floor beneath racks of hanging sides of beef, lay the two children. Leo was lying over his little sister, his small body shivering uncontrollably, his bare hands purple, his fingers bleeding where he had clawed at the steel floorboards. Mia lay motionless beneath him, her long dark eyelashes white with frost, her lips a deep, bruised blue.

"Jesus Christ!" one of the guards gasped, stepping back in horror.

Lorenzo didn't make a sound. He reached down, scooped both children into his arms, and pulled them against his chest, wrapping his heavy wool tuxedo jacket around their tiny, freezing bodies.

"Get the medic!" Lorenzo roared, his voice cracking with a terrifying mixture of agony and rage. "GET DR. VASQUEZ UP HERE NOW!"

Two guards sprinted out of the kitchen, their shoes sliding on the tile.

Lorenzo sat on the freezing floor, rocking his niece and nephew, pressing his warm face against Mia’s icy cheek. "Mia... baby, open your eyes. Uncle Lorenzo's here. Open your eyes."

A faint, shuddering breath escaped Mia’s blue lips. A tiny, weak cry came from Leo’s throat. They were alive. Barely.

Lorenzo closed his eyes for three seconds, his chest heaving as he held them tight. Then he opened them, and the grief vanished, replaced by an absolute, terrifying stillness.

He looked up.

Isabella stood twenty feet away, backed up against a stainless-steel prep table. Her face was pale, her breath coming in short, terrified gasps as she realized the consequences of what she had done.

"Lorenzo..." she whimpered, raising her hands in self-defense. "They were being disrespectful... they were crying... I just wanted to teach them a lesson... I was going to let them out in five minutes, I swear!"

Lorenzo didn't stand up immediately. He carefully passed the wrapped children to his senior lieutenant, Marco, who held them gently, rushing them toward the warm administrative offices down the hall.

Lorenzo stood up slowly. He adjusted the cuffs of his white shirt, wiped a drop of frost from his lapel, and stepped toward Isabella Thorne.

"A lesson," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a flat, deadly whisper that sounded colder than the air leaking from the open freezer.

"Lorenzo, please!" Isabella backed up until her spine hit the sharp edge of the butcher block. "Our families... the merger! My father will—"

Lorenzo reached out, his long fingers wrapping around her throat with precise, terrifying pressure. He didn't slam her; he simply lifted her two inches off the floor until her heels dangled uselessly in the air.

"Your father," Lorenzo whispered, stepping so close she could see her own terrified reflection in his dark eyes, "is going to watch you suffer."

"Wait!"

The voice broke through the tension like a glass breaking on stone.

Lorenzo paused, his grip holding Isabella suspended. He turned his head slowly to look at Elvira Vance, who was standing beside the open freezer door, holding a thick wool blanket she had pulled from the staff breakroom.

"Don't kill her here," Elvira said, her voice steady, her eyes locking onto the most dangerous man in Chicago without a single trace of flinching. "If you kill her now, her father's men will lock down the estate. The medics won't be able to get through the gates. Your niece needs a heated incubator and oxygen in the next ten minutes or her lungs will collapse."

Lorenzo stared at the waitress.

For the first time, he really saw her. She was tall, thin, wearing a plain black waitress uniform stained with water and rust. Her dark hair was pulled back in a practical bun, her pale face smudged with soot from the freezer seals. But her eyes were fierce, clear, and totally unyielding.

Lorenzo looked back at Isabella, whose face was turning blue.

He released his grip. Isabella collapsed onto the floor in a heap of white silk and diamonds, coughing violently, clutching her throat.

"Marco," Lorenzo ordered without looking back down. "Take Isabella to the basement sub-vault. Lock her in the wine cellar. No light. No coat. Tell Arthur Thorne his daughter is resting before the reception."

He turned back to Elvira, his eyes lingering on her face. "You. What's your name?"

May you like

"Elvira," she said simply, holding the blanket out to him. "Elvira Vance."

Lorenzo took the blanket. "You're coming with me, Elvira."
