Chapter 8 - The Thorne Strike

Lorenzo stood up instantly, his hand slipping smoothly into his armpit holster to touch the grip of his custom Kimber .45.

"What is it?" he asked, stepping toward the door.

"Arthur Thorne didn't go home," Marco reported, his voice tight. "He mobilized three teams of mercenaries from the South Side docks. They just breached our outer gate at the south perimeter. They cut the main power lines thirty seconds ago."

SNAP.

As if on cue, every light in the estate vanished.

The room plunged into sudden, dark shadow, lit only by the orange glow of the dying fire in the hearth.

Downstairs, a heavy explosion rocked the foundation of the house, followed immediately by the sharp, rhythmic chatter of automatic gunfire.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Leo stirred in the bed, gasping as he sat up, his small hands clutching the comforter. "Miss Elvira? Uncle Lorenzo?"

"Stay down!" Lorenzo commanded, pulling his handgun from its holster with a smooth, metallic clack.

He turned to Elvira. His voice was calm, ice-cold, and entirely controlled despite the chaos erupting three floors below.

"Marco, take two men and secure the east stairwell," Lorenzo ordered. "Elvira... take the kids into the hidden panic space behind the bookshelf."

Elvira stood up immediately, pulling both children out of bed, wrapping them in heavy wool blankets. "Where does the panic space lead?"

"It doesn't lead anywhere," Lorenzo said, walking to the dark oak bookcase near the hearth. He reached behind a leather-bound set of legal volumes, found a hidden mechanical lever, and pulled it down.

With a low, grinding sound, the heavy wooden bookcase swung inward, revealing a small, reinforced steel room illuminated by battery-powered emergency strip lighting. Inside were two leather chairs, a communication console, and an array of security monitors showing live feeds of the estate perimeter.

"It's three-inch reinforced titanium," Lorenzo said, pushing the children inside. "The door seals from the inside. Once you lock it, nothing short of a military breaching charge can open it."

Elvira ushered Leo and Mia inside, then turned back at the threshold, looking at Lorenzo.

He stood in the dark bedroom, his tall frame outlined by the orange light of the hearth, his gun held ready at his side.

"You're not coming in?" she asked.

"Arthur came here for his daughter," Lorenzo said, his gray eyes shining in the dim light. "And he came to burn this house down. If I go inside that vault, he'll surround it and wait us out. I have to finish this tonight."

Elvira looked at him—at the man who had protected his children, who had saved her mother, who had looked at a plain waitress and seen a human being.

She stepped out of the vault, reaching up to touch his forearm.

"Don't die out there," she whispered.

Lorenzo looked down at her hand on his arm. A small, genuine smile touched his lips.

"I have a reason to live now, Elvira," he said softly.

He pulled her close, pressing a quick, firm kiss against her forehead—a touch that burned like fire against her skin—then gently pushed her back into the vault.

"Lock the door," Lorenzo ordered.

Elvira pulled the heavy titanium door shut. The internal mechanical bolts engaged with a deep, resonant THUD, sealing them in absolute safety as the battle for the Moretti estate raged outside.
