Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Inside the titanium vault, the sound of gunfire was reduced to a faint, distant thumping.

Elvira sat on the leather sofa, holding Mia in her lap while Leo sat close beside her, his head resting against her hip. She monitored the small security screens on the console.

The feeds showed Lorenzo moving through the dark corridors of his estate like a phantom.

He didn't fight like a mob boss surrounded by bodyguards. He fought like a shadow—moving through hidden service passages, cutting off Thorne’s mercenaries one by one in the dark. He knew every inch of the house he had built; his enemies were blundering through dark halls, blinded by flashbangs and directional smoke.

On the screen showing the main lobby, Elvira saw Arthur Thorne himself, carrying a heavy tactical shotgun, flanked by Jimmy "The Hammer" Rourke and three heavily armed men.

Arthur was screaming, his face contorted in insane fury. "Find the girl! Find my daughter! Burn every room until you find her!"

Suddenly, the screen went dark as a flash grenade detonated in the lobby.

Through the static of the monitor, Elvira saw Lorenzo step out from behind a marble pillar directly behind Arthur Thorne.

The engagement was over in five seconds.

Lorenzo fired three precise shots. Jimmy Rourke and the two mercenaries collapsed onto the floor before they could raise their weapons.

Arthur Thorne spun around, lifting his shotgun, but Lorenzo stepped inside his guard, caught the barrel of the gun, twisted it out of Arthur's grip, and slammed the heavy butt of his handgun directly into Arthur's jaw.

CRACK.

Arthur collapsed onto his knees, spitting blood onto his white silk shirt.

Lorenzo stood over him, the heavy barrel of his Kimber .45 resting directly against the center of Arthur’s forehead.

Elvira watched the monitor, holding her breath.

She saw Arthur talking frantically, begging for his life, gesturing toward his daughter down in the basement vaults.

Lorenzo didn't move. He stood over the man who had tried to destroy his family, his face set in stone, his finger resting lightly on the trigger.

For five terrifying seconds, the fate of Chicago’s underworld hung on a single grain of sand.

Then, Lorenzo slowly lowered his gun.

He didn't shoot Arthur Thorne.

Instead, two federal agents in heavy tactical gear—led by a man wearing an FBI windbreaker—stormed through the shattered glass of the front entrance, their weapons raised. Behind them came Marco, carrying a heavy digital storage drive containing every video file, financial record, and wiretap intercept Lorenzo had collected on the Thorne family for the past five years.

Lorenzo stepped back, raising his hands slightly, allowing the federal agents to tackle Arthur Thorne to the floor and snap heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

On the monitor, Elvira saw Lorenzo look directly into the ceiling camera—directly into her eyes.

He gave a single, quiet nod.
