PART 3: THE NAME SHE NEVER TOLD ANYONE

Alexander didn’t move.

For the first time in his life, he didn’t know what to do.

His mother, the strongest person he knew, was looking at a stranger like he was the only person in the world who mattered.

The boy hesitated.

He looked at Alexander.

Then at Eleanor.

“Is it okay?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Her voice was weak.

But certain.

“Come here, Daniel.”

The boy slowly walked toward the bed.

Alexander heard the name.

Daniel.

A name he had never heard before.

When the boy reached Eleanor, she touched his face gently.

Like she had done it a thousand times before.

“I thought I would never see you again.”

The boy wiped his tears.

“You told me to wait.”

Alexander felt his chest tighten.

“What is happening?”

Nobody answered.

Eleanor looked at her son.

And for the first time in years, he saw regret in her eyes.

“Alexander…”

She paused.

“I hid something from you.”

The room went silent again.

Alexander stared.

“What?”

Eleanor took a shaky breath.

“Twenty years ago, before you were born, I had another child.”

Alexander stepped back.

The words felt impossible.

“You had another child?”

She nodded slowly.

“He was taken from me.”

The boy looked down.

“My mother didn’t abandon me.”

His voice was quiet.

“She looked for me.”

Alexander looked at the music box.

Then back at his mother.

The story he had known his entire life was beginning to collapse.

“You never told me.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

May you like

Her answer broke him.

“That you would hate me for failing him.”
