Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Spring

One year later.
The autumn leaves of the Adirondack mountains had turned into a brilliant blanket of crimson, gold, and orange.
At the base of the mountain, in the town of Saratoga Springs, the newly opened Harper Community Foundation held its grand opening ceremony. Funded entirely by the Carver Family Estate, the foundation provided legal aid, emergency housing, and financial assistance to low-income families trapped by predatory lenders and domestic abuse.
Standing on the ribbon-cutting stage was Noah Harper, now eighteen years old and wearing a sharp navy suit, speaking proudly to a crowd of local reporters about his sister’s vision.
Up at Black Pine Springs, the afternoon sun cast long, warm shadows across the private courtyard.
The private hot spring rippled gently under the autumn breeze. Sitting on the stone steps leading into the warm water was Emily. She wore a soft cream-colored sweater, her auburn hair pulled back into a loose, elegant braid.
Beside her sat Dominic.
His wool coat was laid aside, his arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her close against his side as they watched the steam drift into the clear pine air.
"Noah gave a wonderful speech today," Emily noted softly, resting her head against Dominic’s shoulder. "He said you were the brother he always wanted."
Dominic let out a soft, low rumble of amusement. "He's getting bold. Yesterday he asked if he could borrow the armored sedan for his senior prom."
"And what did you say?" Emily giggled.
"I told him if he gets a single scratch on the paint, Caleb will make him wash every vehicle in the fleet with a toothbrush," Dominic smirked.
Emily laughed—a bright, ringing sound that echoed through the quiet stone courtyard, making Dominic’s heart fill with a warmth far greater than the geothermal springs below them.
Dominic turned toward her, pulling a small black velvet box from his pocket.
Emily’s breath caught in her throat.
He opened the box, revealing a breathtaking ring crafted from a raw, unpolished mountain diamond set in a band of smooth, dark river stone—a piece of the very granite that formed the walls of Black Pine Springs.
"One year ago, I found a stranger sleeping in my water," Dominic said, his voice deep, rich, and trembling with emotion. "She didn't know my name, she didn't know my power, and she had every reason to run from me. But she stayed. And she taught me that a home isn't built of stone and security gates. It's built of love."
He looked directly into her brown eyes, holding the ring between his fingers.
"Emily Harper, will you make this sanctuary permanent? Will you marry me?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy overflowed down Emily’s cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes," she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Dominic. Absolutely yes."

Dominic slipped the river-stone ring onto her finger, kissing her deeply as the soft autumn rain began to fall over the black pines.
The debt was erased. The monsters were gone. And in the heart of the cold mountain, two souls who had been broken by the world had built an unbroken warmth that would last forever.
