Chapter 6 - The Velvet Cage of the Estate

Emily stood frozen in the alley, rain dripping from the hood of her raincoat, staring at the man standing over two broken men.

"You... you were watching me?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

"I was protecting my investment," Dominic replied smoothly. He stepped closer, taking her by the elbow—his grip gentle, firm, and entirely respectful. "These men belong to a syndicate out of Buffalo. They have been trailing you for three days, waiting for an opportunity to pull you into a war that isn't yours."

"A war?" Emily repeated, her mind reeling. "I'm a waitress, Dominic! I serve soup and clear tables! I don't belong in your world!"

"You stepped into my world the moment you slept in my spring, Emily," Dominic said gently. He opened the rear door of a black armored sedan parked at the mouth of the alley. "And right now, your apartment isn't safe. Neither is your restaurant."

"What about Noah?" she gasped, panic rising in her chest. "Where is my brother?!"

"Noah is already at my estate," Dominic assured her. "Caleb picked him up from his high school track practice an hour ago. He is currently eating steak in my dining room, completely unhurt."

Emily looked down at the two men lying unconscious on the wet asphalt, then up at Dominic’s calm, resolute face. She realized with absolute clarity that her simple, quiet life was over. The shadow of Dominic Carver had expanded, wrapping around her and her brother entirely.

"Get in the car, Emily," Dominic said softly. "Let me keep you safe."

She climbed into the back seat. Dominic sat beside her, closing the heavy, bulletproof door. As the car pulled away into the rainy Albany night, Emily leaned her head back against the leather headrest, feeling a strange mix of terrifying danger and absolute security.

An hour later, they arrived back at Black Pine Springs.

The estate looked different at night. Floodlights illuminated the soaring stone walls, and armed guards in dark uniforms walked discreetly along the perimeter fence.

When Emily stepped into the main lodge, Noah came running across the hardwood floor, holding a half-eaten slice of cherry pie.

"Emily!" Noah yelled, hugging her. "This place is crazy! They have an indoor basketball court, a pool table, and a chef who made me three burgers!"

Emily hugged her brother tightly, letting out a tearful laugh. "I'm glad you're having fun, kiddo."

"Miss Harper," Ruth Bell stepped forward, offering a warm blanket and a mug of hot tea. "Your room is prepared on the second floor. Noah’s room is right next door."

"Thank you, Ruth," Emily said softly.

Dominic walked toward his private study at the end of the hall. He paused at the door, looking back over his shoulder at her. "Get some sleep, Emily. Tomorrow, we discuss the future."

That night, Emily couldn't sleep.

She lay in the vast, comfortable bed, watching the rain beat against the heavy glass windows. Shortly after 2:00 AM, she wrapped a soft blanket around her shoulders and walked down the dimly lit hallway.

She saw light spilling from the cracked door of Dominic’s study.

She pushed the door open gently.

Dominic was sitting at his desk, surrounded by maps, financial ledgers, and security monitors displaying live feeds of the estate perimeter. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, his dark hair slightly messy, looking every bit the tired commander of an invisible army.

He looked up as she entered. "You should be sleeping."

"I can't," Emily said softly, stepping into the room. She walked over to the large leather armchair across from his desk and sat down. "Why are you doing all of this, Dominic? Really?"

Dominic set his pen down, leaning back in his chair. He looked at her for a long moment, his dark eyes steady and deep.

"Because for fifteen years, every person who has entered my life has wanted something from me," Dominic said quietly. "They wanted money, power, protection, or mercy. They looked at me and saw a tool to be used or a monster to be feared."

He paused, looking toward the window.

"And then you wandered into my spring," he continued softly. "You didn't know who I was. You didn't want my money. You were so tired, so broken by the world, that you fell asleep in a stranger's pool because your body simply couldn't carry the weight anymore. For forty minutes, watching you sleep, I remembered what it felt like to just be a human being."

Emily felt a lump form in her throat. She looked at this powerful, dangerous man, seeing the quiet loneliness he carried behind his impenetrable walls.

May you like

"I don't see a monster, Dominic," she whispered.

Dominic looked back at her, his expression softening in a way that made her heart race. "You should, Emily. Because the men who are coming for me won't stop until they burn everything I care about."
