Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Villa

The heavy iron doors of Alessandro’s private study slammed shut, cutting off the tense, muffled murmurs echoing from the grand hall.

Matteo, Alessandro’s chief enforcer and most trusted lieutenant, threw the bolt, standing guard with his hand rested firmly on his sidearm. Outside, the villa was on complete lockdown. No one was allowed to enter or leave; the perimeter was secured by fifty heavily armed Moretti soldiers.

Inside the study, the atmosphere was suffocating. Rich mahogany bookshelves lined the walls, and a massive fire crackled in the stone fireplace, casting long, dance-like shadows across the room.

I sat on a leather sofa, holding Emma tightly in my lap. She had fallen asleep from pure exhaustion, her little head resting against my shoulder, still clutching the blue rabbit in her tiny fist.

Alessandro stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the rain-slicked gardens of the estate. He had removed his suit jacket, leaving him in a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing dark tattoos that snaked up his forearms.

"Your husband's name was Julian Bennett," Alessandro said without turning around. It wasn't a question.

"Yes," I answered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts. "Julian was an accountant. He worked for a logistics firm in the port district."

"Julian Bennett was not an accountant," Alessandro corrected, turning slowly to face me. His gaze was intense, scanning my face for any hint of deceit. "Julian was a deep-cover cipher strategist. He worked directly for my late elder brother, Lorenzo. He was the man who designed our syndicate's most secure financial encryptions."

I felt as though the floor had dropped out from beneath me. "No... that’s impossible. Julian was quiet. He loved gardening, he bought groceries on Sundays, he..." My voice trailed off as memories rushed back—late nights where Julian sat at his desk sweating over leather notebooks, the sudden terror in his eyes whenever a car lingered too long outside our apartment, the paranoid instructions he gave me right before he died.

If anything ever happens to me, Clara, keep the blue rabbit near Emma. Never throw it away. Never let anyone take it.

"Three years ago," Alessandro continued, walking toward the desk, "Lorenzo was betrayed. Someone inside our inner circle leaked our safehouse coordinates to an elimination squad. Lorenzo was killed, our central reserves were drained, and the master ledger detailing our entire network vanished. We assumed the traitor killed the strategist too."

"Julian died in a hit-and-run two years ago," I said, tears brimming in my eyes. "A stolen truck ran him down in an alleyway near our home. The police said it was a mugging gone wrong."

"It was an execution," Alessandro said coldly. "He spent a year running from Lorenzo’s killers, hiding the crest cipher where no one would ever suspect to look—inside a child's plush toy."

The heavy oak door rattled. Matteo unlocked it, allowing Vivian Romano to step into the room. Her face was flushed with anger, her polished exterior thoroughly shattered.

"Alessandro! This is pure madness!" Vivian demanded, marching toward him, ignoring my presence entirely. "You have locked down the entire estate! Don Ricci and my father are furious! You are holding twelve syndicate leaders hostage over a servant's filthy rag!"

"Watch your tongue, Vivian," Alessandro warned softly.

"I will not watch my tongue!" she snapped, her voice shrill. "We are getting married in three weeks! Our alliance is supposed to unite the Northern territories! Instead, you humiliate me in front of everyone for a maid and her bastard child, listening to insane conspiracy theories about a dead man's toy!"

Alessandro moved with terrifying speed. In a single breath, he closed the distance between them, trapping Vivian against the edge of the mahogany desk.

"If that toy carries Lorenzo's mark," Alessandro growled, his voice vibrating with absolute menace, "it means my brother's killer is currently sitting in my dining room. And if your family had anything to do with it, Vivian, not even your father's three hundred soldiers will save you."

Vivian gasped, her eyes wide with sudden terror. She looked at Alessandro's unyielding expression and realized he was utterly serious. She cast a venomous glance at me, full of burning hatred, before snatching her hand away.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake," she whispered bitterly. "You are choosing trash over power."

She turned on her heel and stormed out of the study, the door slamming behind her.

Alessandro exhaled slowly, adjusting his cuffs. He turned back to me, his expression softening just a fraction.

"You and your daughter will not return to your apartment," he said flatly. "It is no longer safe for you anywhere in Italy. Whoever killed Julian will realize what that rabbit is the moment news of tonight's scene leaks out."

"We have nowhere else to go, Mr. Moretti," I said softly, looking down at my sleeping daughter. "I have no family left. No money."

Alessandro walked over, kneeling beside the couch once more. He looked down at Emma's peaceful face, then raised his eyes to meet mine.

"You are in the house of the lion now, Clara," he said quietly, his voice carrying an undeniable weight of authority. "No one touches you here. I give you my word on my life and my blood."

For the first time in two years of unbearable fear and poverty, a strange sense of warmth filled my chest. Looking into Alessandro's intense eyes, I realized two things: we were caught in the middle of a war—and the king of Milan had just made us his personal responsibility.
