Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Net

By dawn, the Great Gathering Hall had been converted into a tribunal of blood and iron.

The iron doors were chained shut from the outside. Fifty Moretti enforcers stood lined along the perimeter, automatic weapons held at the ready. The leaders of the eleven remaining crime families—bleary-eyed, furious, and terrified—sat around the central table.

At the head of the room sat Alessandro, looking regal and lethal in a dark velvet suit. Beside him stood Matteo, holding a hardened military laptop connected to a projection screen set up against the marble wall.

I stood on the balcony above, guarded by three elite soldiers, holding Emma securely in my arms. Vivian Romano sat near the front of the hall beside her father, Lord Romano—a powerful, white-haired Don whose family controlled the shipping docks of Venice.

"Alessandro! What is the meaning of this imprisonment?" Lord Romano thundered, slamming his fist onto the table. "You cut the power, keep us locked in our rooms overnight, and now you hold us at gunpoint like common criminals!"

"Last night, three assassins attempted to execute Mrs. Bennett and her child inside my private quarters," Alessandro announced, his voice carrying clearly through the silent room.

A murmur of shock rippled through the assembled dons.

"Those assassins carried military-grade gear," Alessandro continued calmly. "Gear that requires clearance, wealth, and access to private security firms."

He motioned to Matteo. Matteo inserted the carbon-fiber micro-key recovered from Emma's rabbit into the laptop.

The large screen behind Alessandro flickered to life. Lines of green code decoded instantly, transforming into hundreds of financial documents, recorded audio files, and bank transfer receipts.

"Three years ago, my brother Lorenzo was murdered," Alessandro said, standing up slowly. "The person who ordered his death paid two million euros to an offshore mercenary group. That money was routed through seven shell companies, originating from a single primary account."

The screen zoomed in on a signature document bearing a familiar coat of arms—an ancient crest featuring three silver stars and a coiled viper.

"The Romano family account," Alessandro declared, pointing straight at Lord Romano.

Gasps filled the room. Lord Romano’s face drained of all color.

"Nonsense! Fabricated lies!" Lord Romano roared, rising to his feet. "You frame me using forged documents from a dead accountant!"

"It gets better," Alessandro said smoothly, pressing a button on his desk console.

An audio file began to play through the hall's speakers. A woman's high-pitched, mocking voice filled the room:

'Make sure the accountant's daughter is handled quietly. If Alessandro finds out the cipher key is in that damned toy, our entire wedding plan falls apart. Once we marry, my father will poison his drink at the reception, and the North belongs to us.'

The entire room turned to stare at Vivian Romano.

Vivian sat frozen, her lips parted in horror, her eyes wild with terror. It was her voice—recorded by Julian Bennett during a covert wiretap operation three years ago right before he was murdered.

"Vivian...?" Don Ricci whispered, disgust written across his weathered face. "You targeted the Capo? You plotted to murder our host under the guise of a sacred marriage alliance?"

"No! It's a fake! He made it up!" Vivian shrieked, backing away from the table, her hands flying to her chest. "Alessandro, please! You must believe me! I love you!"

"You didn't love me," Alessandro said, his tone dropping to absolute zero. "You loved my empire. And you murdered my brother to take it."

Lord Romano reached inside his coat for a hidden firearm, but before he could clear his holster, two suppressed shots rang out from Matteo’s rifle. Lord Romano collapsed back into his chair, lifeless.

Vivian dropped to her knees, sobbing hysterical tears onto the polished floor, surrounded by guards who instantly bound her wrists in steel cuffs.

Alessandro didn't even blink. He looked up at the balcony where I stood holding Emma.

The storm had finally cleared, and the morning sun was breaking through the high stained-glass windows, bathing us in warm, golden light.
