Chapter 3 - The Traitor's Gambit

Night fell hard over the Lombardy countryside, wrapping Villa Moretti in a dense blanket of fog and pouring rain.

Despite the late hour, no one in the villa slept. The twelve crime families were quartered in the grand guest suites in the east wing, guarded by Alessandro’s men, while tension burned through the estate like a slow-burning fuse.

I had been given a luxurious guest room on the top floor, adjacent to Alessandro's private quarters. Emma lay sound asleep in the center of a massive king-sized bed, clutching the blue rabbit tightly to her chest. I sat on the edge of the mattress, unable to close my eyes, watching the rain strike the glass panes.

Suddenly, the lights flickered and died.

Darkness engulfed the room, punctuated only by the faint silver glow of the moon filtering through the heavy storm clouds.

A high-pitched mechanical whine echoed from the hallway outside—the backup generators had been cut.

My heart seized. I bolted upright, instantly moving to scoop Emma into my arms.

"Mommy...?" she murmured drowsily, rubbing her eyes.

"Shh, baby. Stay quiet," I whispered, pressing her close against my shoulder.

Click.

The faint sound of a lock mechanism turning echoed from the heavy double doors of my bedroom. Slowly, inch by inch, the door swung open.

Three shadows glided into the dark room, dressed in black tactical gear, night-vision goggles glowing faint green in the dim light. Suppressed pistols were raised, aimed directly at the bed.

"Target confirmed," a coarse voice whispered in Italian. "Take the girl and the rabbit. Kill the mother."

Panic flooded my veins. I backed into the dark corner behind the heavy velvet curtains, shielding Emma with my body. "Help!" I screamed with all the strength in my lungs. "Help!"

"Silence her!" the lead assassin ordered, stepping forward.

Before he could raise his weapon, the darkness erupted.

The doorway behind the assassins exploded inward as a hulking figure slammed into the room like a runaway train. It was Alessandro.

He moved with terrifying, lethal fluidness. He grabbed the lead assassin's wrist, snapping it with a sickening crack, and ripped the suppressed pistol from his grip in a single continuous movement. Thwip-thwip. Two silent rounds took down the second assassin before he could even turn around.

The third assassin lunged at Alessandro with a combat knife. Alessandro side-stepped the blow effortlessly, drove his elbow straight into the attacker's ribcage, grabbed him by the throat, and slammed him face-first into the heavy stone mantlepiece. The man dropped to the floor, motionless.

The entire engagement lasted less than six seconds.

The room smelled of copper and ozone. Alessandro stood in the moonlight, chest heaving slightly, his bare chest slick with sweat and his drawn pistol aimed at the door. He turned his head slowly toward the shadows where I cowered.

"Clara! Are you hit?" he demanded, his voice laced with rare, raw panic.

"We... we're okay," I sobbed, tears spilling over my cheeks as I held Emma tightly. She was crying now, terrified by the loud noises and dark shadows.

Alessandro stepped over the motionless bodies, rushing to our side. He knelt down, his massive, warm hand gently cupping the back of my neck to check for injuries, his dark eyes searching my face with intense concern. "You're safe. I've got you."

"They came for the rabbit," I breathed, trembling violently.

During the struggle, the blue wool rabbit had been dropped onto the floor, rolling near the edge of the fireplace hearth. The heat from the glowing embers was brushing against its fabric.

Alessandro reached down to scoop up the toy. As he did, the heat from the fireplace caught the inner lining of the rabbit's torn left ear.

The outer navy wool singed away, revealing that the ear was not filled with ordinary cotton stuffing.

Deep inside the plush ear sat a thin, metallic object—a custom-cut, carbon-fiber micro-cipher key, embedded with an encrypted storage chip and stamped with a unique serial code.

Alessandro picked up the dark, polished key, holding it up to the pale moonlight.

"This isn't just a symbol," Alessandro murmured, his eyes blazing with cold realization. "Julian didn't just leave a crest. He hid the physical vault key to Lorenzo's master archive."

He looked at me, a grim, deadly smile touching his lips. "The traitor thought they destroyed every trace of Lorenzo's ledger three years ago. But your husband gave us the rope to hang them all."
