Chapter 10 - The Christmas Promise

One year later. Christmas Eve.

The grand ballroom of the Moretti estate was filled with light, music, and laughter.

A massive fifteen-foot Christmas tree stood beside the grand marble staircase, covered in gold ribbons, warm yellow lights, and hand-painted ornaments that Lily had made herself over the past week.

Over one hundred guests filled the room—not corrupt politicians or terrifying hitmen, but union leaders, charity directors, local community organizers, and loyal family friends who had helped transform the Moretti name into a symbol of protection and philanthropy.

A string quartet played soft holiday melodies near the fireplace.

Dominic stood near the entrance of the ballroom, wearing a sharp black tuxedo, holding a glass of champagne. His silver-gray eyes swept over the room with deep, serene satisfaction.

Beside him stood Don Carmine, looking remarkably healthy in a wheelchair, holding a cup of warm cider, nodding happily to the passing guests.

“Look at this room, Dominic,” Don Carmine rasped softly, a tear glistening in his old eyes. “Thirty years I’ve walked these floors. I never thought I’d live to see this place filled with real joy.”

“It took a very small girl to change it, Don Carmine,” Dominic smiled softly.

At the base of the marble staircase—the very spot where she had sat alone in the dark two years ago—four-year-old Lily was sitting on a plush red velvet cushion.

She was wearing a beautiful velvet dress, her dark curls pinned back with a gold hairclip, surrounding herself with three other young children of the estate staff, showing them a new pop-up storybook.

Elena stood nearby, laughing as she poured punch for the guests, looking completely at home as the heart of the new family estate.

Dominic handed his champagne glass to a passing server and walked over to the staircase.

He dropped down onto one knee beside Lily, resting his hand gently against her back.

Lily looked up from her book, her big brown eyes shining with absolute love. “Daddy! Look! The reindeer in this book can really fly when you pull the tab!”

“That’s amazing, sweetheart,” Dominic murmured softly.

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, exquisite silver locket attached to a delicate platinum chain.

“I have something special for you tonight,” Dominic said gently.

Lily’s eyes went wide. “For me?”

Dominic opened the silver locket.

On the left side was a crisp, tiny photograph of her mother, Sophia, smiling on the Central Park footbridge. On the right side was a tiny photograph of Dominic, Elena, and Lily standing together in the sunlit estate garden.

Dominic carefully placed the platinum chain around his daughter’s neck, fastening the clasp securely behind her hair.

Lily held the silver locket in her small palm, looking down at the two pictures with quiet wonder.

“Mommy is on one side,” Lily whispered softly, her thumb tracing the image of Sophia. “And my family is on the other.”

“She will always be with you, Lily,” Dominic whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion as he kissed her small cheek. “And I will always be right here.”

Lily wrapped her tiny arms around Dominic’s neck, hugging him tight, her soft face resting against his collar. “I love you, Daddy.”

Dominic wrapped his broad arms around his daughter, pulling her close against his heart—the heart that she had saved from the dark, the heart that would beat for her until the end of time.

“I love you too, my sweet girl,” Dominic murmured softly into her hair as the snow fell gently outside the high arched windows, wrapping the estate in peace. “Merry Christmas.”
