Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Syndicate

By 7:30 a.m., the storm had passed, leaving New York wrapped in a silent, glistening coat of fresh white snow.

Inside the Brooklyn warehouse, the atmosphere had shifted from defensive preparation to strategic dominance.

Dominic sat at his desk, surrounded by stacks of financial ledgers, legal documents, and corporate deeds brought by his attorney, Mr. Goldberg—a sharp, gray-suited man who had handled the Moretti family’s legitimate fronts for thirty years.

“It’s incredible, Don Dominic,” Goldberg said, adjusting his round wire spectacles as he pointed at a set of offshore trust documents. “Lucia believed she had sole signing authority on the family’s real estate portfolio, but three years ago, your father quietly inserted a survivorship clause into the primary holding company.”

“Which means?” Dominic asked, taking a sip of black coffee.

“Which means,” Goldberg smiled thinly, “the moment you formally declare a direct blood heir, seventy percent of the family’s real estate assets—including the Park Avenue penthouse, the Brooklyn docks, and the Long Island estate—transfer automatically to a protective trust managed exclusively by you as the legal guardian.”

Dominic looked at the papers. “She doesn't own the estate?”

“She doesn't even own the chair she’s sitting on,” Goldberg confirmed. “The moment we file these birth certificate documents certifying Lily Carter as your legitimate biological daughter, Lucia Moretti is legally destitute.”

Dominic set his cup down. “What about the criminal side? The dock unions and the construction contracts?”

Marco stepped forward from the doorway. “Five capos from the Bronx and Queens just arrived downstairs, Boss. They saw what happened to Frankie Rizzi’s crew at the sugar refinery. They’re standing on the warehouse floor right now, waiting to pledge their loyalty to you.”

“Bring them up,” Dominic instructed.

Three minutes later, five powerful mob bosses stepped into the office. These were hardened men who had controlled New York’s shadow economy for decades. Yet as they stood before Dominic, they looked cautious, almost reverent.

The oldest among them, Don Bernardo of the Bronx, stepped forward.

“Dominic,” Bernardo spoke, his voice gravelly. “We heard what happened last night. We heard about the child. And we heard what Lucia tried to do using Frankie Rizzi.”

“My mother crossed a line that can never be uncrossed,” Dominic said, standing up behind his desk. “She tried to murder a three-year-old child to preserve her political power.”

Bernardo nodded gravely. “In our world, we do many dirty things, Dominic. We fight over territory, we fight over money, we fight over honor. But targeting a Don’s innocent child... that is an abomination. The old ways do not permit it.”

He pulled a heavy gold medallion from his pocket—the symbol of the Bronx faction—and placed it on Dominic’s desk.

“The Bronx stands with you, Don Dominic,” Bernardo declared. “When the Commission meets at nine o'clock, we will vote to strip Lucia of her title and recognize you as the sole head of the Moretti dynasty.”

The other four capos stepped forward one by one, placing their respective tokens onto the desk alongside Bernardo’s.

Dominic looked at the five tokens representing the overwhelming majority of New York’s criminal underworld.

“Thank you, gentlemen,” Dominic said quietly. “Now, I want you to prepare your men. At nine o'clock, we aren't just having a meeting.”

He looked toward the private room where Elena and Lily were resting.

“We are holding a trial.”
