Chapter 8 - The Healing of the Past

Two weeks after the trial at the cathedral, the snow in Central Park had settled into pristine drifts under a clear, bright blue winter sky.

The footbridge where Sophia’s famous photograph had been taken four years ago was quiet, surrounded by snow-covered oak trees.

Dominic walked across the bridge, wearing his dark wool overcoat. Beside him walked Elena, her face bright and relaxed, no longer wearing a maid’s uniform, but a warm beige coat Dominic had bought for her.

Walking between them, holding both their hands and jumping happily over small patches of ice, was Lily.

“Higher, Daddy! Higher!” Lily giggled as Dominic and Elena swung her gently into the air over a snowdrift.

Dominic laughed—a light, genuine sound that felt completely natural now. He set Lily down gently on the wooden planks of the footbridge.

The little girl ran ahead toward the stone railing, pointing at a pair of ducks swimming in the unfrozen patch of the lake below. “Look, Aunt Elena! The ducks have warm coats too!”

Elena chuckled softly, stepping closer to the railing to watch the child.

Dominic leaned against the wooden arch of the bridge, pulling the worn photograph of Sophia from his pocket. He looked at the image of the woman he had loved so fiercely, then looked at their daughter laughing in the snow twenty feet away.

Elena stepped beside him, looking at the picture. “She would be so happy, Dominic. Sophia always dreamed of taking Lily here.”

“I’m going to build a foundation in her name,” Dominic said softly. “The Sophia Carter Memorial Trust. It will fund housing and medical care for single mothers and children across the state. No woman will ever have to hide in a cold apartment in Utica again.”

Elena’s eyes filled with soft tears. She placed her hand gently over his sleeve. “She knew you were a good man, Dominic. Even when she was hiding, even when she was scared, she never stopped talking about how kind your heart was beneath all that armor.”

Dominic closed his eyes for a moment, feeling a deep, ancient knot of pain inside his chest finally unwind.

The ghost of his past, the haunting memory of an unexplained abandonment, was gone. In its place remained only love, honor, and a promise kept.

“What about you, Elena?” Dominic asked, turning to face her. “What do you want to do now?”

Elena looked out over the sparkling, snow-covered park. “I want to go to university. I always wanted to study child education, but... we could never afford it.”

“Consider it done,” Dominic said smoothly. “Goldberg has already set up a full academic scholarship and an estate account in your name. You will never have to worry about rent or tuition again.”

Elena gasped, covering her mouth. “Dominic... I can't accept that—”

“You saved my daughter, Elena,” Dominic interrupted, his voice thick with emotion. “You kept her safe when I wasn't there. You are part of this family. Whatever you need, for the rest of your life, is yours.”

Elena threw her arms around his broad shoulders, hugging him tightly. Dominic embraced her back with deep, familial warmth.

“Daddy!” Lily came running back across the bridge, her small boots pattering on the wood, holding a pristine white snowball in her tiny gloved hands. “Look what I made!”

Dominic dropped to one knee, a warm smile spreading across his handsome face. “That is a magnificent snowball, Lily.”

“Can we throw it at the snow monster?” she asked, her brown eyes sparkling with mischief.

Dominic picked her up, settling her comfortably against his chest. “We can throw it at whatever you want, sweetheart. This park belongs to you now.”
