Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

Nora knelt on the cold Carrara marble, the sharp, metallic tang of spilled elderberry tonic stinging her nostrils. Crystal shards glittered beneath the harsh chandeliers like broken teeth. Above her, Celeste Beaumont stood with her arms crossed, her silk gown rustling softly, a picture of absolute, unbothered arrogance.
On the mahogany wheelchair sat Elena Ventresca. Her breathing came in short, rattling gasps, her paper-thin skin graying at the temples. A vivid scarlet welt was rising along her left cheekbone.
"Pick up the glass, Nora," Celeste commanded, her voice dropping into a razor-thin purr. "And don't look at her. She is paying the price for her own insolence."
Nora’s hands trembled, but not from fear. She reached toward the leather portfolio resting precariously on the edge of the antique writing desk. When Celeste had shoved her moment ago, a single document had dislodged, fluttering down beside the shattered glass.
Nora’s eyes scanned the bold header: VENTRESCA FAMILY HOLDINGS — CONTINUITY AMENDMENT.
Below it, bold black ink claimed to transfer full controlling interest of the Ventresca maritime trusts to the Beaumont Corporation upon marriage. But it was the notary block at the bottom that made Nora’s stomach drop into a dark abyss.
The official seal was dated March 14th.
Nora remembered March 14th vividly. It was the night Elena had suffered her ischemic stroke. Elena had been in an induced coma in the private ICU at Mount Sinai, surrounded by armed guards and heart monitors. She hadn’t held a pen, let alone signed a legal transfer of a four-billion-dollar syndicate empire.
"You forged this," Nora whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop them.
Celeste took a slow, deliberate step forward, the heel of her Louboutin crunching down on a fragment of crystal. She reached out and plucked the silver pill case from the side table, casually tossing it between her hands. Inside, Elena’s life-saving heart medication rattled rhythmically.
"I am about to become the queen of this family, housekeeper," Celeste sneered, bending down until her perfumed breath touched Nora’s ear. "In four days, Luca and I will be married. Whatever I say happened on March 14th is what happened. Now clean up this mess before I decide you belong in the gutter with her."

Nora looked up into Celeste’s icy blue eyes. Celeste believed she was untouchable. She believed Luca was currently ten thousand feet above the Atlantic, flying toward a banking summit in Zurich. She believed the estate was empty of anyone who mattered.
She was utterly, catastrophically wrong.
