Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

Nora moved with practiced efficiency, sweeping the glittering shards into a brass pan while Celeste stepped out onto the balcony to answer a phone call from her wedding planner.

The moment the glass doors shut, Nora rushed to Elena’s side. She pulled a backup blister pack of digoxin from her apron pocket—a secret reserve she always kept for emergencies—and slipped a tablet under the old woman’s tongue.

Elena swallowed painfully, her frail fingers tightening around Nora’s wrist with surprising strength.

"Child," Elena breathed, her throat scratchy and dry. "You must not provoke her. She has her father’s men watching the perimeter."

"She’s starving you of your medication, Mrs. Ventresca," Nora whispered furiously, gently wiping a tiny smear of blood from the older woman’s bruised cheek. "She’s trying to sign over the entire eastern division before the wedding. We have to call the authorities."

Elena offered a bitter, weary smile. "The authorities in this city answer to the Ventrescas and the Beaumonts, Nora. A housekeeper's word against the bride of the syndicate means nothing."

"Then we wait for Luca," Nora insisted. "He comes back from Switzerland on Friday."

Elena’s eyes flicked upward toward the heavy crown molding that framed the ceiling. Her thumb pressed hard into Nora’s palm, pointing subtly toward a tiny, hidden recess inside the hand-carved mahogany leaves.

Nora followed her gaze. Hidden within the dark wood was a microscopic glass lens, no larger than a pinhead. A tiny, imperceptible crimson light pulsed once every three seconds.

Nora’s heart gave a sudden, violent leap.

The estate’s internal security system hadn’t been shut down for maintenance as Celeste’s guards had claimed. It was active. High-definition, encrypted, and fed directly to a secure off-site server.

Luca hadn't left his mother unprotected. He had set a trap.

"He isn't in Zurich, is he?" Nora breathed.

Elena didn't answer with words. She simply closed her eyes and let out a soft, relieved breath as the digoxin began to stabilize her racing heart.
