Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

Luca walked down the altar steps with slow, deliberate grace. The entire cathedral fell dead silent once more, save for the heavy sound of his boots against the marble floor.

He stopped two feet away from Celeste, who was trembling so violently she could barely stand.

"Luca..." Celeste choked out, tears of terror smearing her mascara. "Luca, please... it’s a setup... it’s a deepfake! I love you! I did everything for us!"

Luca slowly raised his hand. He didn't strike her. He simply reached out and gently plucked the diamond engagement ring from her left hand, slipping it into his vest pocket.

"The jet to Zurich was empty, Celeste," Luca said, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the cathedral. "Every room in my mother’s house was wired the day you moved in."

He turned his gaze toward Julian Beaumont, who was already being forced to his knees by two FBI agents.

"Julian Beaumont," the lead Federal agent announced, unholstering steel handcuffs. "You and your daughter are under arrest for attempted murder, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit extortion, and corporate racketeering."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Celeste’s delicate wrists, she began to scream, thrashing against the officers as her two-hundred-thousand-dollar gown was dragged through the grime of the cathedral aisle.

"You can't do this to me! I am a Beaumont!" she shrieked, her voice echoing pathetically as she was hauled away.

Luca ignored her cries. He turned toward the front row.

He walked over to his mother, dropping down onto one knee before her wheelchair. He took Elena’s frail hands in his own, kissing them gently.

"Forgive me for the delay, Mother," Luca murmured softly. "It is over."

Elena smiled, a tear tracing a path down her cheek. "I knew you were watching, my son."

Luca stood up and turned his dark, piercing eyes toward Nora, who was standing quietly beside the chair.

The entire cathedral watched as the most powerful man in the syndicate stepped toward the humble housekeeper.

Luca reached out, taking Nora’s hand, and brought it to his lips, kissing her knuckles with deep, genuine respect.

"You protected my mother when everyone else bowed to greed," Luca said, his voice soft but unwavering. "From this day forward, Nora, you are no longer a servant in my house. You are family. And anyone who touches you answers directly to me."

Nora felt a warm tear slip down her cheek, holding her head high as the grand doors of the cathedral were thrown open, letting the bright, clean sunlight wash away the darkness.
