Chapter 10 - The Sea Breeze

Two years later.

The blue Atlantic ocean stretched endlessly toward the horizon off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.

A seventy-foot luxury motor yacht named The Guardian glided smoothly through the light summer swells, its white hull cutting through the sparkling water under a cloudless sky.

On the upper deck, eight-year-old Noah and ten-year-old Ethan were wearing bright orange life jackets, laughing as they threw breadcrumbs to a flock of seagulls trailing behind the stern.

Standing near the wheelhouse was Adrian, holding his newborn nine-month-old daughter, Sarah, against his chest. The baby had Claire’s big hazel eyes and a tuft of dark, soft hair.

Claire stepped out of the cabin, wearing a flowing yellow summer dress that billowed gently in the sea breeze.

She walked over to Adrian, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind, resting her cheek against his shoulder as they watched their children play on the deck.

“She’s sleeping,” Adrian whispered, looking down at his daughter, who was sucking her thumb against his chest.

“She smells like salt and sun,” Claire smiled, reaching up to gently pat the baby’s back.

Adrian turned slightly, wrapping his free arm around Claire’s waist, pulling her full, soft body tight against his side.

He looked out at the ocean, then down at his wife, feeling a deep, unshakeable peace that no amount of money or corporate power could ever buy.

Four years ago, he had watched a screen in horror as three armed men invaded his home. He had rewound the footage twice, staring at a woman he thought was a simple nanny.

He had rewound the video looking for answers.

What he had found was the salvation of his life, his sons, and his soul.

“I love you, Claire,” Adrian whispered into the sea wind, kissing her forehead.

Claire looked up into his eyes, her smile radiating brighter than the afternoon sun on the water.

“I love you, Adrian,” she whispered back.

And as the boat sailed smoothly across the open sea, the Mercer family rode the waves together, safe, whole, and protected forever.
