Chapter 3 - The Broken Seal

Claire didn't flinch.

She slowly reached down with her right hand and pulled a small, worn silver medallion from the pocket of her jeans.

She held it out in her palm.

The medallion was stamped with an ancient, raised crest: a striking falcon perched atop a shattered sword, surrounded by Latin text.

In Umbra Lux.

Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat.

His hand reached out, his fingers brushing against hers as he took the cold metal coin from her palm.

“The Vane Foundation,” Adrian whispered, his eyes wide with shock. “Arthur Vane.”

“Your father-in-law,” Claire said softly. “Before Sarah died, she knew her father’s former associates in the syndicate would eventually come for Ethan and Noah once they reached school age. She knew your wealth could buy guards, but guards can be bribed. Guards watch doors. They don't watch children.”

Adrian stared at the silver coin in his hand.

Arthur Vane had been a legendary figure in the private intelligence sector—a former director of naval intelligence who had spent thirty years building an elite, off-the-books security firm specializing in high-value child protection. He had passed away two years after Sarah’s death.

“Arthur trained you?” Adrian asked, his voice rough.

“Six years,” Claire said, touching her bandaged forearm gently. “I was a senior tactical instructor for the Foundation’s high-threat protection division. When Arthur’s health failed, his final directive to me was clear: enter the Mercer household as a domestic staff member and remain unseen until the threat materialized.”

Adrian leaned back, taking a deep, shuddering breath as the pieces of the puzzle fell into place with terrifying alignment.

The soft, full-figured appearance. The quiet demeanor. The oversized clothes.

It was all an immaculate cover, designed to disarm suspicion from both the Mercer household staff and potential kidnappers. No corporate rival or syndicate hit team looking at the Mercer estate would ever suspect that the curvy, gentle nanny reading bedtime stories to the boys was a lethal combat instructor.

“Who tipped off the intruders tonight?” Adrian asked, his eyes turning back to hard steel. “They had internal clearance codes.”

Claire stood up from her chair. Her broad shoulders straightened, her full height and powerful stance now fully visible without the soft posture she used around the children.

“Your security captain,” Claire said flatly. “Frank Vance.”

Adrian’s jaw set like granite. “Frank has been with me for seven years.”

“Frank’s gambling debts in Atlantic City were quietly cleared three weeks ago by a holding company registered in Delaware,” Claire said, stepping past him toward the window. “The same holding company that purchased the assault weapons used by the three men tonight. He turned off the eastern perimeter sensors at 9:08 p.m.”

She turned her head, looking at Adrian over her shoulder.

“They didn't come to steal money, Mr. Mercer. They came to take Ethan and Noah to force you to sign over control of the harbor logistics terminals at tomorrow’s board meeting.”

Adrian looked at the silver coin in his hand, then back at Claire.

The anger and suspicion that had burned inside him all night slowly burned away, leaving behind a cold, ruthless clarity.

“Frank is currently in the lower security trailer,” Adrian said softly. “Sweeping the radio frequencies.”

Claire walked toward her dresser, opening the top drawer and pulling out a small, black tactical holster containing a suppressed nine-millimeter pistol. She attached it smoothly to her inner thigh beneath her jeans.

“Then I suggest we go have a conversation with him, Mr. Mercer,” Claire said, her hazel eyes flashing with a cold, lethal heat. “Before he realizes his three men aren't coming back.”
