Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Siege

At 9:00 a.m. the following morning, the financial district of downtown Boston was shrouded in a heavy, grey autumn mist.
The eighty-story glass tower of Mercer Logistics stood like a monolith overlooking the harbor.
Inside the grand penthouse boardroom on the top floor, twelve men in dark suits sat around a thirty-foot glass conference table.
At the head of the table sat Victor Sterling—a senior board member and major shareholder with sharp, predatory features, sleek silver hair, and a seven-thousand-dollar Italian suit.
Sterling checked his gold wristwatch, tapping his manicured fingers against the polished glass.
“It’s nine-fifteen,” Sterling announced, his voice dripping with smooth, calculated arrogance. “Adrian Mercer is late. Under Section Four of the corporate charter, if the Managing Partner fails to present the harbor expansion manifests by nine-fifteen, the board has the right to force a vote of emergency receivership.”
A murmur of agreement went through four of the board members—men who had secretly aligned themselves with Sterling’s syndicate connections.
“Give him ten minutes, Victor,” said Donald Hayes, an older board member and long-time ally of Adrian’s. “His house was attacked last night. His children were endangered.”
Sterling feigned a look of deep, sympathetic concern. “And that is precisely why Adrian is no longer fit to serve as CEO, Donald. The man’s personal life is a violent liability. He cannot protect his own home, let alone a four-billion-dollar shipping enterprise.”
Sterling reached for his leather pen, preparing to sign the receivership document.
“Vote the shares,” Sterling commanded. “I nominate myself as acting—”
The heavy double glass doors of the boardroom swung open with a sharp, echoing reverberation.
Adrian Mercer walked into the room.
He was wearing an immaculate charcoal three-piece suit, his dark hair combed back, his posture rigid and commanding as a king returning to his throne.
Beside him walked Claire Bennett.
She wore a tailored black pantsuit that accented her striking, full figure, her broad shoulders held high, her injured left forearm subtly tucked behind her back. In her right hand, she carried a heavy silver briefcase.
The entire boardroom fell dead silent.
Sterling’s pen hovered an inch above the paper. His face paled slightly as his eyes flicked from Adrian to Claire.
“Adrian,” Sterling stammered, quickly recovering his smooth smile. “We... we were worried about you. We heard about the tragic security breach at your estate last night.”
“Did you, Victor?” Adrian said smoothly, taking his seat at the head of the table.
Claire stepped up beside his chair, setting the silver briefcase down on the glass table with a heavy, metallic THUD.
“You look surprised to see me, Victor,” Adrian said, leaning back, resting his hands on the armrests. “And even more surprised to see my sons’ nanny.”
Sterling cleared his throat, adjusting his silk tie. “I am merely glad your family is safe, Adrian. But as I was explaining to the board, your personal security situation—”
“My personal security situation,” Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register that made every man in the room freeze, “has been fully resolved.”
Adrian nodded to Claire.
Claire pressed the biometric lock on the silver briefcase. The locks clicked open.
She pulled out a stack of heavy white documents and tossed them across the glass table, sliding them straight into Sterling’s lap.
“Those are the bank records from the Delaware shell company, Victor,” Claire said, her voice ringing out clearly through the acoustic room. “Along with the encrypted wire transfers sent to Frank Vance’s offshore account at six-thirty yesterday evening.”
Sterling stared at the documents in his lap, his jaw trembling. “This... this is absurd! This is a fabrication!”
“The Federal Bureau of Investigation is currently seizing your private yacht at Pier 14, Mr. Sterling,” Claire added calmly. “And two federal marshals are standing in the lobby downstairs.”
Sterling slammed his hands on the table, standing up, his face turning red with rage. “This is ridiculous! You bring a hired domestic servant into my boardroom to accuse me of—”
Adrian stood up.
In one sudden, terrifying motion, Adrian reached across the table, grabbed Sterling by his silk tie, and dragged him three feet forward across the glass surface until their faces were inches apart.
“She isn't a servant, Victor,” Adrian snarled, his gray eyes burning with pure, unadulterated fury. “She is the woman who saved my children from your hit squad. And if you ever speak her name again, I won't wait for the feds.”
Adrian shoved Sterling back into his chair.
The heavy double doors opened, and two uniformed federal agents walked into the boardroom, holding an arrest warrant.
“Victor Sterling,” the lead agent declared. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, corporate treason, and wire fraud.”
As the agents slapped handcuffs on Sterling’s wrists and led him out of the room, the remaining board members sat frozen in absolute terror.

Adrian turned to the table, sweeping his cold gaze over every man present.
“Meeting adjourned,” Adrian said softly.
