Chapter 3 - THE EMPIRE'S PROTECTOR

By sunrise, the atmosphere inside the Starks mansion had shifted entirely.
The domestic staff was assembled in the grand foyer—twenty maids, cooks, butler staff, and groundskeepers standing in a rigid, nervous line. They had all heard the frantic commotion at three in the morning. They had all seen Helena Starks being dragged away in chains by Viktor.
They assumed a mass firing was imminent.
Instead, Rory Starks descended the grand marble staircase dressed in a bespoke, three-piece charcoal suit, his dark hair combed back, looking every inch the king of the city's criminal underworld.
Walking right beside him was Veronica Cruz.
She was no longer wearing the faded navy maid’s uniform.
Over her shoulders was a soft, tailored ivory cashmere sweater, fitted charcoal trousers, and elegant leather flats—clothes brought down personally from the estate's private guest ward by Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, whose hands were shaking with nervous awe.
Rory stopped at the foot of the stairs, sweeping his piercing gaze across the trembling staff.
"Listen to me carefully," Rory announced, his voice booming across the tall foyer, echoing off the gilded mirrors and crystal chandeliers. "Effective immediately, Veronica Cruz is no longer an employee of this domestic staff."
A quiet collective gasp rippled through the line of maids.
"She is now the personal Medical Director and Chief Guardian of my daughters, Lily and Rose," Rory continued, his voice leaving zero room for debate or question. "Her authority in this house is second only to mine. If she gives an order, it is my order. If she asks for a door to be unlocked, you open it. If anyone in this house disrespects her, lies to her, or fails to obey her instantly, Viktor will execute you in the courtyard."
The staff bowed their heads frantically, murmuring unanimous, terrified agreements. "Yes, Mr. Starks! Understood, sir!"
Rory didn't wait for them to finish. He turned to Veronica, his expression instantly softening into something remarkably tender—a stark, terrifying contrast to the ruthless tyrant he presented to the world.
"Come," Rory murmured, placing his hand on the small of her back, guiding her toward the private dining room. "The girls are awake. They asked for you."
Inside the sunlit dining room, Lily and Rose were sitting at the long mahogany table, eating pancakes covered in maple syrup. For the first time in two months, their eyes were bright, the dark circles under their eyes had vanished, and their faces were full of healthy, vibrant color.
The moment they saw Veronica enter, both little girls dropped their forks, slid off their chairs, and ran across the room, wrapping their arms tightly around Veronica's legs.
"Miss Veronica!" Lily cheered, pressing her face against Veronica's trousers. "My head doesn't hurt anymore! The bad buzzing went away!"
"Daddy said you chased the monster out of our room!" Rose squealed, looking up with wide, worshipful brown eyes. "Are you a superhero?"
Veronica dropped to her knees, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across her face as she gathered both little girls into a warm hug. "No, sweetheart. I'm just your doctor. And I promise you, no monsters will ever come back into your room again."
Standing near the door, Rory watched the scene unfold. His chest rose and fell heavily. For a man who had built his vast fortune on violence, extortion, and cold calculation, seeing his children laugh again felt like a spiritual rebirth.
He walked over, kneeling down beside Veronica, placing his hands on his daughters' shoulders.
"Girls," Rory said softly. "Dr. Veronica is going to live with us now. She's going to make sure you stay healthy and safe every single day."
"Yay!" Lily giggled, clapping her hands together. "Does that mean she gets to sleep in the big bedroom next to yours?"
Veronica’s cheeks flushed a delicate shade of pink. She looked up at Rory, expecting him to dismiss the innocent childhood comment.
Instead, Rory looked back at her, his dark gray eyes burning with an intense, unyielding heat that made her heart skip a frantic beat.
"Yes, Lily," Rory said smoothly, his eyes locked onto Veronica’s lips. "That is exactly what it means."
Later that afternoon, Rory led Veronica down into the subterranean levels of the estate—past the high-tech security war rooms, past the armory, and into a private, state-of-the-art medical research facility that Veronica had no idea existed beneath the house.
It was equipped with millions of dollars of cutting-edge diagnostic equipment, surgical suites, and pharmaceutical synthesis laboratories.
"What is this place?" Veronica asked in absolute awe, running her fingers over an advanced mass spectrometer.
"After my wife died of an untreatable blood disease three years ago, I built this facility," Rory explained, leaning against a stainless steel counter, watching her intently. "I brought in top specialists, but they were all greedy, incompetent fools who cared more about my money than saving lives. I kept it sealed ever since."
He stepped closer to her, hand dipping into his jacket pocket, pulling out a sleek black leather folder. He set it on the table in front of her.
"What's this?" Veronica asked.
"Your father's complete medical debt records," Rory revealed. "Purchased and paid off in full three hours ago. The fraudulent pharmaceutical liability lawsuit filed against him by the Moretti family? Erased. The federal arrest warrants issued under your real name? Cleared by my attorneys in Washington."
Veronica stared at the folder, her breath catching in her throat. Her eyes welled with sudden, overwhelming tears. "You... you cleared everything? Just like that?"
"You saved my daughters, Veronica," Rory said, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly register. He reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a single tear that escaped down her cheek. "In my world, we pay our debts with absolute loyalty. You are a free woman now. You can take your real name back, take your father, and leave this city forever if you want."
Veronica looked up into his fierce, handsome face. She saw the lethal mafia boss who ruled an empire with an iron fist, but beneath it, she saw a fiercely protective father, a man carrying profound grief, a man who had looked at her not as a maid, but as an equal.
"And what if I don't want to leave?" Veronica whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
Rory’s eyes darkened with raw, possessive desire. He leaned in, his lips hovering inches from hers, his breath hot against her skin.
"If you stay, Veronica," Rory warned softly, "I will never let you go. I will tear this entire city apart to keep you safe, but you will belong to me. My home, my children, my bed. You will be my queen."

Veronica didn't pull away. She reached out, her fingers resting against the warm skin of his tattooed neck, feeling the rapid, powerful beat of his heart.
"Then you had better buy me a proper coat, Mr. Starks," Veronica replied fiercely. "Because I'm not going anywhere."
