Chapter 4 - THE WAR OF THE FAMILIES

The peace inside the Starks mansion was short-lived.

Three days after Helena's betrayal was exposed, the city's underground economy exploded into chaotic violence.

The Moretti family—the powerful Italian syndicate that had leveraged Helena’s gambling debts to plant the acoustic weapon—realized their surveillance feed had gone dead. When their secondary hit squad failed to make contact with Helena, they launched a series of aggressive strikes against Starks commercial properties across the downtown district.

Warehouses were firebombed. Starks distribution trucks were hijacked. Two senior syndicate lieutenants were ambushed outside a private club.

Inside the Starks war room, Rory sat at the head of a massive marble conference table surrounded by fifteen heavy syndicate commanders. The air was thick with cigar smoke and tense, aggressive energy.

On the main digital wall display, map coordinates of Moretti territory flashed in bright red.

"They're pushing hard on the eastern docks, boss," Viktor reported, slamming a heavily annotated map onto the table. "Don Antonio Moretti knows we cut his ear off inside the mansion. He knows Helena is compromised. He’s striking now because he thinks you're distracted by domestic trouble."

"Let him think whatever he wants," Rory said coldly, leaning back in his leather chair, swirling a glass of dark amber bourbon. "Where is Antonio staying tonight?"

"At the Grand Plaza Hotel," Viktor replied. "He’s hosting his annual charity gala on the top floor tonight. Over three hundred city elites, politicians, police chiefs, and cartel leaders will be there. It’s an impenetrable fortress. He has sixty armed men patrolling the hotel floors."

Rory let out a low, dark laugh.

At that moment, the double doors of the war room swung open.

Every commander in the room instinctively reached for their sidearms, expecting an emergency breach.

Instead, Veronica Cruz walked smoothly into the room.

She was wearing an exquisite, floor-length crimson silk gown that hugged every curve of her body, her dark hair styled in elegant Hollywood waves, a dazzling diamond necklace resting against her collarbone—a gift Rory had delivered to her suite an hour earlier.

The hardened mob commanders stared in utter shock, quickly taking their hands off their holstered weapons, bowing their heads in immediate respect as they recognized the woman who now ruled their boss's heart.

Rory stood up instantly, stepping away from the conference table, meeting her halfway across the room. His eyes swept over her in the red dress, burning with intense, undisguised pride.

"You look stunning, Dr. Cruz," Rory murmured, taking her gloved hand and raising it to his lips.

"Are we still going to the gala?" Veronica asked calmly, glancing at the tactical maps on the screen.

"It might get dangerous, Veronica," Rory warned, his gaze searching her eyes. "Antonio Moretti is a desperate animal. He will be surrounded by his entire inner guard."

"Good," Veronica replied, a cold, sharp smile playing on her lips. "Because I have a personal message to deliver to the man who tried to poison your daughters and ruin my father's life."

An hour later, a fleet of six armored black limousines pulled up to the grand valet entrance of the Grand Plaza Hotel.

The paparazzi flashes were blinding. Dozens of high-society photographers and news reporters crowded behind silver velvet ropes as security guards opened the door of the lead limousine.

Rory Starks stepped out first, looking imposing, regal, and terrifying in his black tuxedo.

He turned and offered his hand.

Veronica Cruz stepped out beside him, her crimson dress shimmering under the bright hotel spotlights, her hand resting gracefully on his arm.

The crowd erupted into frantic whispers and blinding camera flashes.

"Who is she?!"

"Is that Rory Starks’s new partner?!"

"Where is his sister, Helena?!"

"Who is the woman beside the mafia king?!"

Rory ignored the shouting reporters. He leaned close to Veronica’s ear, his hand firmly grasping her waist, pulling her flush against his side as they walked up the grand red carpeted steps into the hotel lobby.

"Tonight, the entire city learns who you are," Rory whispered against her cheek.

"And who am I, Rory?" Veronica asked, looking up into his eyes.

"You are the woman who owns my soul," Rory replied simply. "And the deadliest weapon in this city."

They rode the private express elevator to the penthouse ballroom on the fiftieth floor. When the brass doors slid open, the sound of classical orchestral music, laughing elites, and clinking champagne glasses filled the air.

Over three hundred of the city's most influential figures—corrupt judges, wealthy real estate moguls, high-ranking police officials, and rival mob bosses—were gathered beneath massive crystal chandeliers.

Standing near the center stage, surrounded by five armed guards, was Don Antonio Moretti—a heavy, gray-haired man in his late sixties, wearing an expensive tailored suit, sipping champagne with the city's Deputy Police Commissioner.

The moment Rory and Veronica stepped into the ballroom, the orchestral music faltered.

The laughter died down.

A suffocating, dangerous silence spread across the grand hall like wildfire.

Don Antonio set his champagne glass down on a waiter’s tray, his eyes narrowing into cold slits as he spotted Rory Starks. But when his gaze moved to the breathtaking woman standing on Rory's arm, his expression faltered into sudden, uneasy confusion.

Rory walked straight through the center of the ballroom, the crowd parting like the Red Sea before his terrifying presence. He stopped ten feet from Antonio Moretti.

"Antonio," Rory greeted smoothly, his tone pleasant, his eyes deadly.

"Rory," Antonio replied, his heavy voice dripping with fake politeness. "I didn't expect you to attend my humble charity event tonight. Especially given the... unstable health of your sweet little daughters."

A collective murmur passed through the crowd of elites.

Veronica took a step forward, slipping her hand out of Rory's arm, standing completely independent, her gaze fixing on Antonio with absolute, icy contempt.

"The twins are in perfect health, Don Antonio," Veronica announced, her clear, powerful voice carrying across the silent ballroom. "The acoustic weapon your mercenaries planted inside their room has been destroyed. The encryption codes have been cracked. And the federal paper trail linking your offshore accounts to pharmaceutical fraud has been delivered to the United States Department of Justice twenty minutes ago."

Antonio’s face turned an instant, horrifying shade of purple. He took an instinctual step back, his hand darting toward his inner jacket pocket. "Who the hell are you?!"

Before Antonio's hand could touch a weapon, Rory moved with blinding speed.

In one fluid motion, Rory pulled a sleek silver pistol from his tuxedo holster, pressed the barrel directly under Antonio Moretti’s jaw, and slammed the older mob boss backward against the marble pillar!

The ballroom erupted into terrifying, hysterical screams! Women dropped their champagne glasses, politicians scrambled behind velvet couches, and Antonio's five guards instantly drew their weapons, pointing them directly at Rory’s head!

At the exact same second, Viktor and twenty heavily armed Starks operatives burst through every entrance of the ballroom, their automatic rifles raised, locking down the room in an impenetrable tactical ring!

"Put your guns down," Rory commanded softly, his pistol pressed hard against Antonio's quivering chin. "Or I blow his head off right here in front of the Deputy Commissioner."

The guards hesitated, looking frantically at Antonio, whose eyes were wide with sheer, breathless terror.

"Rory... please..." Antonio choked out, sweat pouring down his forehead. "We can make a deal! We can share the port revenues! Don't do this here!"

Rory didn't look at Antonio. He turned his head slightly, looking at Veronica, who stood calm, elegant, and entirely unbothered amidst the sea of drawn weapons and screaming elites.

"Veronica," Rory said softly, his voice echoing across the silent, frozen room. "Does this man deserve to live?"

The entire ballroom held its breath.

The power, the destiny, and the life of the city's second most powerful mafia family hung entirely on the word of a woman who, forty-eight hours ago, had been sweeping floors in a maid’s apron.

Veronica walked up to Antonio Moretti. She looked down at the trembling old man, her dark eyes reflecting zero mercy.

"My father spent four years in prison because of your lies," Veronica whispered, her voice cold as ice. "And you tried to destroy six-year-old children for profit. You don't deserve a deal, Antonio."

She looked at Rory. "Take his empire. Strip his name. Leave him with nothing."

Rory smiled—a terrifying, beautiful, lethal smile.

He lowered the pistol from Antonio’s jaw and struck the old man hard across the face with the heavy iron grip!

Antonio crumpled to the marble floor, coughing blood, his gold watch shattering against the tile.

Rory stepped over his groaning body, turned to face the entire room of terrified city leaders, and wrapped his arm firmly around Veronica Cruz's waist, pulling her close to his chest.

"Listen to me!" Rory roared across the grand ballroom, his voice echoing like thunder. "This is Dr. Veronica Cruz! She is the future Mrs. Starks! She rules this city beside me! If any family, any politician, or any syndicate ever looks at her with anything less than absolute respect, I will hunt your bloodline to the end of the earth!"

The room remained dead silent. No one dared to speak. No one dared to move.

Rory turned Veronica toward the private elevator, his eyes burning with intense, eternal devotion.

"Let's go home, my queen," Rory whispered.
