Chapter 2 - The Serpent at the Table

Dinner at the DeLuca estate was not a family gathering; it was a display of territorial dominance.

The grand dining room featured a thirty-foot mahogany table beneath a crystal chandelier that looked heavy enough to crush a tank. At the head of the table sat Lorenzo DeLuca, dressed in a sharp dark suit, cut of rich wool that screamed old-world power.

To his right sat his chief legal advisor, a slick, pale man named Julian Vance. To his left sat Carlo.

When Mia entered the room walking half a step behind Matteo, Lorenzo’s cold eyes immediately tracked her movement. He noted the way her gaze never settled on one spot—how her eyes swept the ceiling corners, the service entrances, the windows, and the hands of every server moving through the room.

"Sit, Matteo," Lorenzo commanded, gesturing to the chair at his right.

Matteo took his seat. Mia remained standing three feet behind his chair, her posture relaxed, her arms folded lightly over her stomach—a position that allowed her to draw the concealed sidearm beneath her blazer in under half a second.

"You don't need to stand behind him like a statue, Miss Callaway," Lorenzo said smoothly, cutting a piece of steak with surgical precision. "We have twenty armed men on the grounds. The house is secure."

"The house has blind spots, Mr. DeLuca," Mia replied, her tone respectful but firm. "And twenty men who expect an attack from the front gate are useless against a strike from within."

Julian Vance chuckled softly, dabbing his mouth with a linen napkin. "The girl has a flair for the dramatic, Lorenzo. It’s charming, really. But the Ferretti family doesn't have the reach to breach this estate. Our intelligence indicates they are still stuck in negotiations over the docks."

"Intelligence is only as good as the person selling it to you, Mr. Vance," Mia noted, her sharp eyes fixing on Vance’s left hand.

She had noticed it three minutes ago. Julian Vance was nervous. His left shoe tapped a quick, frantic rhythm against the Persian rug beneath the table. His thumb repeatedly rubbed the silver band of his watch. And most importantly, he hadn't touched his wine—a vintage Amarone that Lorenzo had personally poured for him.

"Are you questioning my sources, Miss Callaway?" Vance asked, his voice tightening slightly.

"I'm questioning why a man who claimed to be starving in the lounge an hour ago hasn't taken a single bite of his meal," Mia said calmly.

The dining room went dead silent.

Lorenzo set his fork down. The heavy silver clinked sharply against the china plate. He looked from Mia to Julian Vance.

"Is something wrong with the food, Julian?" Lorenzo asked, his voice dropping an octave into a terrifying, icy quiet.

"Of course not, Lorenzo!" Vance laughed nervously, picking up his fork. "I'm simply... stressed about the contract filings for tomorrow morning. The workload has been enormous."

"I see," Lorenzo said.

Mia didn't look at Vance. She kept her eyes on Carlo, who was sitting across the table.

Carlo hadn't looked surprised by Mia's observation. In fact, his left hand had subtly drifted beneath the edge of the dining table, resting near his waist.

He's in on it, Mia realized with sudden, crystalline clarity. Carlo isn't just incompetent. He's the facilitator.

Suddenly, the grand chandelier above the table flickered once, twice, and completely died.

The entire dining room was plunged into pitch-black darkness.

Instantly, the heavy sound of chairs scraping against stone echoed through the room. Shouts of confusion erupted from the hall outside.

"Nobody move!" Carlo’s voice roared in the dark.

In the fraction of a second before the backup generators could kick in, Mia moved with terrifying speed. She didn't draw her gun. She lunged forward, grabbed Matteo by the back of his collar, and violently yanked him sideways out of his chair just as a heavy, metallic thud echoed through the room.

A ten-inch tactical blade slammed straight through the leather upholstery of Matteo’s chair—exactly where his neck had been positioned a microsecond earlier.

The emergency red floodlights flickered on, bathing the dining room in a blood-red glow.

Matteo hit the floor beside Mia, looking up in shock at the knife buried in his seat.

Standing behind his chair, holding the hilt of the blade, was one of Carlo's trusted inner-guard lieutenants.

"Traitor!" Lorenzo bellowed, drawing a nickel-plated revolver from his shoulder holster with astonishing speed for a man his age.

Before Lorenzo could fire, the attacker vaulted across the table, knocking the gun from Lorenzo's hand. At the same time, Julian Vance bolted toward the side service door, while Carlo drew his weapon, aiming it directly at Matteo’s chest.

"Sorry, kid!" Carlo spat. "The Ferrettis pay better!"

Mia didn't hesitate. She didn't reach for her gun—there wasn't enough time.

Instead, she snatched a heavy silver champagne bucket filled with melting ice from the serving cart beside her and hurled it with lethal force straight at Carlo's head.

The metal bucket struck Carlo square across the bridge of his nose with a sickening crunch. His gun discharged wildly into the ceiling as he crashed backward onto the floor, blood spraying across his tactical vest.

Without missing a beat, Mia swept her leg across the floor, catching the second attacker behind the knees and bringing him down hard onto the mahogany table. She drove her elbow into his solar plexus, disarmed him in a single fluid motion, and slammed his head against the wood, knocking him unconscious instantly.

The entire fight had taken less than seven seconds.

When the dust settled, the red emergency lights illuminated a scene of complete carnage.

Julian Vance was pinned against the service door by two outer guards who had finally burst into the room. Carlo was on his back, groaning and holding his shattered nose, his face covered in blood. The second attacker lay limp on the dining table.

And in the center of it all stood Mia Callaway—her hair slightly untangled, her blazer neatly buttoned, standing over Matteo with her hand extended down to help him up.

"I told you," Mia said softly, her breath completely steady. "Your feet might be unreliable, but my hands aren't."

Matteo took her hand, letting her pull him to his feet. He looked at the blade embedded in his chair, then at Carlo bleeding on the floor, and finally at his father.

Lorenzo DeLuca stood near the head of the table, holding his recovered revolver, staring at Mia Callaway with an expression that was no longer cold or dismissive.

It was pure, stunned awe.
