Chapter 5 - The Dawn of a New Guard

The morning sun rose golden and bright over the snow-dusted grounds of the DeLuca estate, burning away the thick fog that had hung over the valley all night.

At 8:00 AM, a black executive sedan pulled up to the iron front gates of the mansion.

Mr. Hensley, the director of Varro Security Agency, stepped out of the vehicle, wearing a sharp charcoal suit and carrying an official contract termination file under his arm. He looked thoroughly miserable, fully expecting to collect Mia Callaway's belongings and apologize to Lorenzo DeLuca for sending a guard who had likely broken an expensive vase or caused an administrative disaster.

As Hensley walked up the grand stone steps to the front entrance, the heavy oak doors opened.

Standing in the grand foyer was Lorenzo DeLuca, flanked by his son Matteo.

Beside Matteo stood Mia Callaway. She was wearing a tailored dark suit, her hair tied back in a neat, professional ponytail, looking completely composed, calm, and immaculate.

Hensley stopped in his tracks, blinking in surprise. "Mr. DeLuca... I am deeply sorry for any inconvenience my agency may have caused you last night. I came to personally escort Miss Callaway off your property and—"

"Save your breath, Hensley," Lorenzo interrupted, his voice booming across the foyer with quiet authority.

Hensley swallowed hard. "Sir?"

"Miss Callaway is no longer an employee of your agency," Lorenzo announced, pulling a thick, sealed envelope from his coat pocket and handing it to the director. "Inside is a check covering her contract buy-out fee, along with a bonus for Varro Security for sending her to my home."

Hensley stared at the check inside the envelope, his eyes wide with absolute shock. The number written on the paper was larger than his agency's annual operating budget.

"I... I don't understand," Hensley stammered, looking from the check to Mia. "Miss Callaway? But... her interview... the trash can..."

Matteo stepped forward, placing a warm hand gently on Mia's shoulder, looking at Hensley with a sharp, amused grin.

"Miss Callaway uncovered an internal traitor, dismantled an armed assault team of six men, saved my life twice, and restructured our family's entire security system in under twelve hours, Mr. Hensley," Matteo informed the director smoothly. "She is now the Chief Security Officer of the DeLuca Global Enterprise."

Hensley’s jaw practically hit the marble floor. He looked at Mia, completely speechless.

Mia offered Hensley a polite, professional nod. "Structural weakness, Mr. Hensley. I told you I notice details most people ignore."

Hensley slowly closed his mouth, nodded in stunned defeat, wished them a good day, and quickly hurried back down the steps to his sedan.

As the gates closed behind the agency director's car, Mia, Matteo, and Lorenzo walked out onto the sweeping back patio overlooking the vast, sunny gardens.

The air was crisp, clean, and cold.

"So, Chief Callaway," Matteo said, pouring two cups of fresh espresso from a silver tray on the patio table and handing one to her. "What is our first order of business today?"

Mia took a sip of the warm espresso, looking out over the sprawling perimeter wall, her mind already calculating new camera placements, motion sensors, and security rotations.

"First," Mia said, looking back at him with a clever, beautiful smile, "we are going down to the city to buy those shoes."

"And second?" Matteo smiled back, leaning against the stone railing beside her.

"Second," Mia said, her eyes glinting with dangerous, unyielding confidence, "we let the Ferretti family know that if they ever look at this house again... they won't see me coming."

Matteo laughed, raising his cup to hers in a quiet toast under the morning sun.

The mafia boss had said no woman could guard his son. But as the new day dawned over the DeLuca empire, everyone inside those iron gates knew that the clumsy girl with the brilliant mind was the most dangerous shield the family would ever have.
