Chapter 4 - The Mastermind Unmasked

By 2:00 AM, the estate grounds were secured.
Two platoons of loyal DeLuca soldiers, dispatched from the family's downtown headquarters, had arrived to lock down the perimeter. The remaining Ferretti breach team outside had been captured or driven off into the surrounding woods.
Inside the grand estate, the main power had been restored. The crystal chandeliers once again cast a warm, golden glow over the marble halls, though the scent of gunpowder, ozone, and spent copper still hung heavily in the air.
In the private sub-basement vault beneath the wine cellar, Lorenzo DeLuca stood before two steel chairs.
Bound to the chairs with heavy zip-ties were Carlo and Julian Vance. Vance was weeping openly, his expensive suit ruined, while Carlo sat sullenly, blood caked across his broken face.
Mia stood near the doorway, her shoulder leaning against the stone arch, her hands tucked into her blazer pockets. Matteo stood beside his father, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression hard and cold.
"I gave you everything, Carlo," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he paced back and forth in front of his former security chief. "A house on the coast. A pension for your family. Respect. And you sold my son's life to the Ferrettis."
Carlo spat a mouthful of blood onto the concrete floor. "The Ferrettis offered me ten million dollars and a thirty percent cut of the dock shipping lines, Lorenzo. You kept me on a leash for fifteen years! I was never going to be family to you!"
"And you, Julian?" Lorenzo asked, turning his gaze toward the trembling lawyer.
"I... I had gambling debts, Lorenzo!" Vance sobbed, his voice cracking hysterically. "They were going to kill my brother! They promised nobody would get hurt! They said they just wanted Matteo as leverage to force you to sign the harbor contracts!"
"They were going to kill him, Julian," Mia's voice cut through the room like a cold razor blade.
Everyone turned to look at her.
Mia walked slowly into the center of the room, stopping directly in front of Vance. She pulled the folded cream cardstock from her pocket—the note she had found in the library passage hours earlier.
"This wasn't a kidnapping note, Vance," Mia said, unfolding the paper and holding it in front of the lawyer's tear-filled eyes. "This was an execution notice. 'Tonight, you won't see it coming.' The Ferrettis never intended to use Matteo as leverage. They were going to murder him, execute Lorenzo in the chaos, and use you to sign over the family assets under a forged power of attorney."
Vance’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror. "No... no, they promised—"
"They lied to you," Mia said flatly. "You were a useful idiot. And the moment the papers were signed, Carlo would have put a bullet in your head and dumped you in the river."
Carlo sneered, looking away toward the wall, confirming her words with his silent, bitter glare.
Lorenzo looked at Mia, his eyes filled with profound respect. "How did you find the note, Miss Callaway? My men checked the library three times today."
"They checked the furniture," Mia explained. "They didn't check the structure. The note was pushed through a hidden Prohibition-era passage that connects this basement directly to the library and your master study upstairs. Carlo greased the hinges two days ago to allow the Ferretti hit team inside without tripping the perimeter sensors."
Lorenzo closed his eyes for a long, heavy moment. When he opened them, the cold, lethal resolve of a crime boss had returned completely.
"Marco!" Lorenzo called out.
A massive, loyal soldier stepped into the vault from the hallway.
"Take Julian and Carlo to the docks," Lorenzo ordered quietly. "Ensure they are given a very long, very deep swim in the bay."
"No! Please! Lorenzo, mercy!" Vance shrieked as Marco and two other guards hauled them out of their chairs and dragged them screaming down the corridor.
Silence settled over the vault.
Lorenzo turned to face Mia. The legendary mafia boss walked over to her, paused, and slowly bowed his head in a gesture of absolute humility that no man in the city had ever witnessed him perform.
"I owed you an apology, Miss Callaway," Lorenzo said, his voice deep and sincere. "I judged you by your gender, your size, and a clumsy accident in an office lobby. If you had not been in this house tonight, my son would be dead, and my family empire would have fallen."
Mia looked at the powerful man, her expression remaining calm and professional. "Apology accepted, Mr. DeLuca. But my contract with Varro Security expires at sunrise."
"Name your price," Lorenzo said instantly. "I will pay you triple your agency rate to stay on as Matteo's permanent head of personal security."
Mia glanced at Matteo.
The young heir was looking at her with an open, hopeful smile—a look that held far more than just gratitude for saving his life.
"I have three conditions," Mia stated.
Lorenzo raised an eyebrow. "Name them."
"First," Mia said, holding up one finger. "I answer only to Matteo, not to you or your lieutenants."
"Done," Lorenzo agreed without hesitation.
"Second," she continued, holding up a second finger. "I completely redesign the entire estate security protocol from scratch. No old guards, no predictable rotations, and no secret passages that aren't monitored by my personal equipment."
"Done," Lorenzo nodded.
"And third?" Matteo asked, stepping closer to her, his dark eyes sparkling with genuine warmth.
Mia looked down at her shoes, then back up at Matteo with a subtle, witty grin.

"You buy me three new pairs of sensible work shoes," Mia said. "Because kicking mercenaries in the neck completely ruins the leather."
Matteo burst into a bright, booming laugh that echoed through the stone vault. "Deal, Mia Callaway. Deal."
