Chapter 8 - The Transformation

In the aftermath of the failed assault, the city witnessed a total purge. Don Valenti’s faction was systematically dismantled, its assets seized by the Duca empire, establishing Alessandro as the unchallenged, absolute ruler of the territory.

A week later, the day of the wedding arrived.

The ceremony took place not in a public cathedral, but on the private cliffside estate owned by the Duca family overlooking the northern sea. The afternoon sun shone brightly through a high glass canopy decorated with white roses and trailing ivy.

Elena stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror in the bride’s quarters, wearing a gown of antique ivory lace that cascaded into a long, majestic train. The sapphire ring sat comfortably on her finger, now accompanied by a simple, elegant band of white gold.

A soft knock came at the door, and Marco stepped inside, carrying a small velvet pillow. On it sat a delicate silver tiara set with smaller sapphires.

“From Don Alessandro, Signora,” Marco said respectfully, bowing his head. “A gift before you walk.”

Elena looked at the enforcer in the mirror. “Marco... six months ago, I cleaned the floors in this house. Do the men really accept me as their leader’s wife?”

Marco looked up, his rough, scarred face softening into a rare, genuine smile. “Signora Elena... six months ago, Don Alessandro was a cold man who lived only for war and spreadsheets. He was terrifying, but he was hollow.”

He reached out, setting the tiara gently on the vanity table.

“You gave him a heart,” Marco said quietly. “Our men do not follow you because of a title. They follow you because you made our Don human again. There is not a soldier in this city who would not lay down his life for you and little Mia.”

Tears gathered in Elena’s eyes, but she blinked them back, offering Marco a warm, grateful smile. “Thank you, Marco.”
