Chapter 9 - The Sovereign's Vow

The doors of the glass pavilion opened, and Elena walked down the aisle of white marble.
Two hundred of the most powerful people in the country stood in quiet respect as she passed. At the end of the aisle stood Alessandro. He wore a crisp black tuxedo, his posture immaculate, his dark eyes watching her approach with an intensity that made the rest of the world vanish.
Beside the altar, Marco stood holding ten-month-old Mia, who was dressed in a tiny white dress, happily clapping her small hands as she saw her mother.
When Elena reached the altar, Alessandro took her hands in his. His palms were warm, steady, and strong.
The officiant spoke the traditional rites, but when the time came for the vows, Alessandro spoke without reading from the ceremonial book.
“I spent ten years building an empire out of iron and blood,” Alessandro said, his low voice echoing through the quiet pavilion. “I believed that power was the only thing that could keep a man alive. But when you stepped into my life, Elena, you showed me that power without purpose is merely a cage.”
He raised her left hand, kissing the knuckle where his family ring rested.
“I vow to honor you, to protect you, and to place your happiness above all things. I take your daughter as my own blood, and I swear before God and this city that no harm will ever cross your threshold while I draw breath.”
Elena felt a single tear slip down her cheek, her heart swelling with an overwhelming, radiant joy.
“I came to you with nothing,” Elena whispered, her voice clear and strong. “I was afraid, broke, and alone. You gave me a home, a name, and a safety I never thought I would know. I give you my life, my love, and my absolute devotion, today and for all the days to come.”

“I pronounce you husband and wife,” the officiant declared.
Alessandro pulled Elena into his arms, dipping her slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, fierce, and lingering kiss that sealed their fate forever. The crowd erupted into loud, thunderous applause, the sound carrying out over the crashing sea below.
