Chapter 2 - The Silent Vow

When Claire opened her eyes an hour later, she executed the performance of her life.

She allowed her voice to crack. She let her eyes pool with heavy, helpless tears as Daniel took her hand and delivered the fabricated news with practiced sorrow.

“They didn’t make it, sweetheart,” Daniel murmured, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. “Respiratory distress. The doctors tried everything.”

Claire wept into his shoulder, feeling the synthetic fabric of his suit jacket. She let him hold her, let Vanessa stand in the corner offering solemn nods of pity, and let the attending physician document her grief.

Inside, her heart was turned to stone.

By 2:00 AM, the room was silent. Daniel had gone home under the guise of resting, leaving a private nurse outside the door. Vanessa was gone.

Claire sat up slowly, biting her lip until she tasted copper to suppress the agonizing pull on her surgical incision. Swing legs over the mattress. Feet touching the cold floor.

She crawled to the radiator, her fingers trembling as she reached beneath the metal housing. Her fingernails scraped the linoleum before hooking the soft plastic strap.

She pulled it into the dim light.

Claire clutched the tiny strip of plastic to her chest, her breathing heavy and ragged. They hadn't just stolen one child; they had taken both of her twins.

She pulled her cell phone from her purse on the bedside table and dialed a private satellite number she had memorized at fifteen.

The line rang once.

“Claire?” Arthur Vance’s deep, authoritative voice answered instantly, crisp despite the late hour. “Why are you calling from a hospital landline alternate? What’s wrong?”

“Dad,” Claire whispered, clutching the phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. “I need you to bring your team. Not the company lawyers. The operators.”

Silence hung over the line for two seconds.

“Who hurt you?” Arthur asked, his voice dropping into a register that had once made foreign cartels and rogue defense contractors tremble.

“Daniel and Vanessa,” Claire said, tears finally slipping down her face, not from sorrow, but from righteous fury. “They told me my twins died in the operating room. But I found Twin A’s active tracking band. They stole my babies, Dad.”

“I’m launching the bird,” Arthur replied without a single second of hesitation. “I’ll be at St. Jude’s Private Hospital in twelve minutes. Don't confront them. Don't utter a word. Let them think they won.”
