Chapter 3 - The Ghost Network

Twelve minutes later, the heavy double doors of St. Jude’s VIP floor opened without a sound.

Arthur Vance walked down the corridor not like a billionaire visiting his daughter, but like a commanding general inspecting a conquered forward operating base. Behind him walked three men in dark charcoal suits—former FBI Special Agents and elite intelligence contractors who now ran Vance Security's covert operations division.

At the lead was Marcus Drake, Arthur’s chief of intelligence and a former Deputy Director of the FBI’s Cyber and Counterintelligence Division.

Arthur entered Claire’s room, taking in her pale face and the surgical tubes still hooked to her arms. He knelt beside her bed, his broad hands enveloping hers.

“Where are they?” Arthur asked gently.

Claire handed Marcus the plastic bracelet. Marcus scanned the embedded RFID bar code using a high-powered mobile terminal pulled from his jacket pocket.

“This band was bypassed in the hospital system forty-five minutes after the emergency C-section,” Marcus reported, his eyes scanning green lines of code scrolling across his screen. “The internal log says 'System Error - Tag Deactivated.' But the physical sensor didn't clear. Someone physically cut the strap off the infant in Nursery B and threw it under the radiator to erase the trace.”

“Who signed the transfer order?” Arthur demanded.

“Dr. Harold Vance—no relation,” Marcus said, pulling up a medical credential file. “Head of Obstetrics at St. Jude’s. He received a wire transfer of six hundred thousand dollars two hours ago into an offshore account in Saint Kitts. The remitter was an anonymous shell corporation registered in Delaware.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed. “Whitmore Medical Technologies uses Delaware shell firms for research acquisitions.”

Marcus tapped his screen again. “I just pulled the hospital’s basement parking garage camera feed from ninety minutes ago. A private transport ambulance belonging to a firm called Apex Medical Services left through the service tunnel. The owner of Apex? Vanessa Cole’s brother.”

Arthur stood up, turning to Marcus. “Activate the network. I want every satellite covering the tri-state area locked onto that vehicle. I want wiretaps on Daniel Whitmore, Vanessa Cole, and Dr. Vance by morning.”

“Already done, sir,” Marcus replied. “We’ve also mirrored Daniel’s phone. Every text, every encrypted chat, every bank transfer is routing straight to our mobile command unit.”

Claire looked up at her father. “Where did they take my babies?”

Marcus hesitated, looking at his terminal. “They didn't take them to a safehouse, Claire. They took them to a private clinical research facility on the border of upstate New York.”

“Why a research facility?” Claire asked, her voice shaking.

Marcus looked Arthur dead in the eye. “Because according to the encrypted files we just extracted from Dr. Vance’s server... the twins weren't stolen just to give Vanessa a child. They were taken because of what’s in their blood.”
