Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the Blood

The basement of the Pinecrest Research Center smelled of ozone, bleach, and cold stainless steel.

Claire walked slowly between two armed operators, every step driving a dull needle of pain through her lower abdomen. She ignored it. The adrenaline surging through her veins burned away the pain, replacing it with a singular, fierce focus.

They passed a laboratory filled with centrifuges, genetic sequencers, and rows of glass vials marked with the Whitmore Medical Technologies corporate logo.

At the end of the hall stood a reinforced glass door labeled CLEAN ROOM - AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.

Inside, Dr. Harold Vance was standing over two plastic incubators, adjusting the flow rate on a specialized IV monitor. Two nurses were preparing small blood draw kits on a stainless steel tray.

Grizzly gave a hand signal.

Three. Two. One.

The heavy glass door was kicked inward with a deafening crash.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! ON THE GROUND! NOW!” Grizzly roared, his suppressed rifle trained on Dr. Vance’s chest.

The two nurses screamed, throwing their hands up and dropping to their knees immediately. Dr. Vance gasped, knocking over a tray of medical instruments as he backed away toward the wall, his face turning paper-white.

“Don't move!” an operator ordered, securing the doctor with zip-ties within seconds.

Claire pushed past the operators, her eyes locked on the two acrylic cribs in the center of the room.

She reached the first incubator. Inside lay a tiny baby wrapped in a pink blanket, her miniature chest rising and falling rhythmically beneath a monitor lead. On her ankle was the matching strap to the one Claire had found under the radiator.

Beside her, in a second incubator, lay a baby boy wrapped in blue, sleeping peacefully.

Tears spilled over Claire’s cheeks, but this time they were tears of pure, overwhelming love. She unlatched the incubator door, reaching inside with trembling, gentle hands, and lifted her daughter against her chest. She pulled her son into her other arm, holding both infants against her heart.

“I’ve got you,” Claire sobbed, pressing her face into their soft blankets. “Mommy’s here. I’ve got you.”

Dr. Vance, pinned against the wall by an operator, stared at Claire in sheer horror. “Mrs. Whitmore... how... how did you find this place?”

Claire turned slowly, holding her twins tightly. Her eyes were colder than the steel tables around them.

“My father owns the sky, Dr. Vance,” Claire said softly. “And you just signed your own death warrant.”

Marcus walked into the clean room, holding a encrypted mobile satellite phone.

“Claire,” Marcus said, holding up the screen. “Daniel and Vanessa just arrived at Whitmore Medical headquarters in downtown Chicago. They’ve called an emergency midnight board meeting to finalize the patent filing using the stolen genetic data.”

Claire looked down at her sleeping babies, then back at Marcus.

“Call the FBI Director,” Claire said quietly. “Tell him Arthur Vance is delivering the biggest corporate crime bust of the decade on a silver platter.”
