Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Shadow

At 7:00 AM, while the morning sun began to filter through the smog of the city skyline, Mason sat in his private office on the fortieeth floor of the Sloane Infrastructure Tower. He hadn't slept. He hadn't taken off his jacket. His eyes were bloodshot, but his mind was running with cold, lethal clarity.

Across the broad mahogany desk sat Julian Vance—not related to the detective, but Mason’s chief head of private intelligence and former military counter-intelligence officer. Julian placed a thin black tablet on the desk and slid it toward Mason.

"We pulled the financial records for Vanessa Vale, as well as her encrypted communication logs over the last ninety days," Julian reported, his voice devoid of emotion. "She’s been bleeding money, Mason. High-stakes offshore real estate investments in Dubai went under three months ago. She owes roughly twelve million dollars to a private equity firm based in Zurich."

"Who owns the equity firm?" Mason asked.

"A shell company called Apex Horizon Holding," Julian replied, tapping the screen to bring up a complex ownership tree. "And guess who sits on the advisory board of Apex Horizon? Richard Sterling."

Richard Sterling was the billionaire investor who had backed Mason’s first major municipal bridge project fifteen years ago. Sterling was a man of the old guard—a ruthless titan who believed that founders were replaceable instruments designed to generate returns for capital holders. Over the last two years, Sterling and Mason had clashed repeatedly over the Harbor Expansion Project, a four-billion-dollar initiative to modernize the city’s industrial shipping district.

Mason wanted the project to include green spaces, public access points, and fair wage guarantees for local dockworkers. Sterling wanted maximum industrial density, automated terminals, and the elimination of union contracts.

"Sterling tried to buy my voting shares last month," Mason recalled, leaning back in his chair. "I told him no. I told him the company would remain under family control as long as I breathed."

"If Claire had died last night," Julian pointed out, "and if the grief had pushed you to step down or if you were compromised, Sterling’s syndicate would have had enough voting power through the temporary board panel to execute the harbor contracts under his terms. They would have cleared over eight hundred million dollars in immediate development payouts."

"They didn't just try to kill my wife," Mason whispered, his voice trembling with a quiet, terrifying rage. "They tried to turn the birth of my children into a corporate takeover."

"We found something else," Julian added softly. "The RFID badge that registered Vanessa Vale in the hospital room at 8:42 PM... it was cloned. The real Vanessa Vale was indeed sitting in the family lounge. We checked the security camera footage from the hallway. At 8:40 PM, a woman dressed in standard nursing scrubs, wearing a surgical mask and a cap, walked into the anteroom using a cloned copy of Vanessa’s guest badge."

Mason leaned forward, staring at the screen. "Who was the woman?"

"We ran her face through our internal facial recognition database, filtering for medical personnel who were dismissed from Sloane-funded medical research facilities over the past two years," Julian said, zooming in on the pixelated camera feed. "Her name is Dr. Karen Webb. She was a senior biochemist at Sterling Pharmaceuticals until six months ago, when she was quietly terminated for unauthorized research into synthetic neurotoxins."

The picture became clear. It wasn't just an opportunistic attack. It was a professional, highly coordinated hit executed by people with limitless resources, designed to frame Vanessa Vale as the primary suspect while securing corporate assets for Sterling’s syndicate.

Mason closed his eyes for three seconds, letting the cold reality settle into his bones. Then he opened them.

"Find Dr. Webb," Mason commanded. "Bring her to me before the police find her. And do not let Richard Sterling know we are looking at him."
