Chapter 8 - The Falling Cards

The arrest of Richard Sterling made national headlines before the morning sun reached the floor of the Stock Exchange.

State troopers and federal agents executed a simultaneous raid on the headquarters of Sterling Financial and his private estate in the suburbs. The evidence provided by Mason Sloane—backed by Dr. Karen Webb’s detailed testimony, the recovered USB drive from Claire’s purse, and the forensic financial logs uncovered by Julian’s team—was insurmountable.

By noon, Vanessa Vale called an emergency press conference at Sloane Infrastructure Tower. She stood before dozens of news cameras, her voice steady and her demeanor immaculate, officially clearing her name while presenting the full evidence of Sterling’s criminal conspiracy to the public.

"Sloane Infrastructure Group was built on a foundation of integrity and family," Vanessa announced to the crowded room of reporters. "The cowardly attempt by outside financial actors to destabilize this firm by targeting our founder’s family has failed completely. Mrs. Claire Sloane is recovering fully, and our commitment to the public good remains unbroken."

Behind the scenes, Mason worked with surgical efficiency. Using the legal leverage provided by Sterling’s criminal indictment, Mason executed an immediate buyout clause written into the original syndicate agreements, absorbing Sterling’s entire forty percent stake in the Harbor Expansion Project for pennies on the dollar.

In a single twelve-hour window, Mason hadn't just eliminated the threat to his family; he had consolidated absolute control over the largest civil infrastructure firm in the Southeastern United States. The board was restructured, the hostile elements were purged, and new security protocols were instituted across every facility bearing the Sloane name.

That evening, Detective Vance met Mason in the quiet courtyard of St. Catherine’s Medical Center.

"Sterling’s high-priced lawyers are trying to secure bail," Vance said, lighting a cigarette despite the hospital’s non-smoking signs. "But with the federal charges and the poison attempt on your wife, the judge locked him up without bond. He’s going away for the rest of his life, Mason."

"And Webb?" Mason asked.

"She took a plea deal," Vance replied, blowing a plume of grey smoke into the night air. "Twenty years in a federal penitentiary for attempted murder and conspiracy. She’ll be an old woman when she steps outside again."

Mason nodded slowly, looking up at the high floor where the light was softly glowing in Claire’s private room. "Thank you, Marcus. For listening when everybody else thought it was just a medical complication."

"I’ve seen a lot of powerful men in this city, Mr. Sloane," Vance said, throwing the cigarette butt onto the pavement and crushing it under his shoe. "Most of them protect their money first and their people second. You did it the other way around. Don't lose that."
