Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at Sterling Tower

The sun was setting behind the glass monolith of the Sterling Financial Center. On the top floor, inside a private dining room overlooking the harbor, Richard Sterling sat at a long mahogany table, sipping a forty-year-old scotch. He was a man of seventy, with silver hair, cold blue eyes, and the relaxed posture of someone who had spent his entire life buying people and disposing of them when they lost their utility.

The double doors of the dining room swung open without warning.

Sterling’s two private security guards stepped forward to block the entrance, but they were instantly pushed aside as four of Mason’s tactical operators secured the perimeter.

Mason Sloane stepped into the room. He was still wearing the charcoal suit from the previous night, but the tie was gone, his collar unbuttoned, his expression possessing the sharp, terrifying weight of an executioner.

"Mason," Sterling said, placing his crystal glass onto the table with an annoyed sigh. "You are breaking several security protocols by barging in here like a street thug. I heard about Claire. Truly tragic. I was going to send flowers to the hospital once the board meeting was concluded."

Mason walked to the end of the table, pulling out a heavy leather chair and sitting down directly opposite the old man.

"The flowers won't be necessary, Richard," Mason said. "Claire woke up twenty minutes ago."

Sterling’s hand twitched almost imperceptibly against the stem of his glass. His cold blue eyes narrowed by a fraction of a millimeter. "That is... marvelous news. A miraculous recovery."

"It wasn't a miracle," Mason replied, leaning his forearms against the polished wood. "It was toxicology. Dr. Bennett identified the organophosphate compound Karen Webb used on her. Once we administered the pralidoxime, her heart stabilized. She’s speaking. She’s already held our daughter."

Sterling slowly picked up his glass again, taking a deliberate sip. "I have no idea who Karen Webb is, Mason. If you are suggesting that some rogue medical employee targeted your wife, that is a matter for the police, not for my dining room."

"Karen Webb is currently in state custody," Mason lied smoothly, his eyes locked onto Sterling’s face. "She gave a full, sworn videotaped confession forty-five minutes ago. She provided the encrypted text messages, the bank routing details for the Swiss account, and the audio recording of you hand-delivering the chemical compound to her inside your Lincoln Town Car on Tuesday night."

Sterling froze. The color slowly drained from his face, leaving his weathered skin looking like yellowed parchment.

"You thought you were dealing with a businessman, Richard," Mason whispered, his voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade. "You thought because I wear suits and attend galas that I forgot where I came from. You thought I was weak because I cared about my wife, my children, and the people who build my roads."

Mason stood up, reaching into his pocket and placing a small digital recorder on the mahogany table.

"That recorder contains every word spoken in this room over the last two minutes," Mason said. "Along with the complete financial trail showing your attempt to short Sloane Infrastructure stock prior to the harbor deal opening. At 8:00 AM tomorrow morning, every major network, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the State Attorney General will receive copies of this file."

"Mason... wait," Sterling said, his voice losing its polished composure, a crack of desperate panic showing through. "We can negotiate. The Harbor Project... I’ll surrender my equity shares. I’ll give you total control of the development board. You can have eighty percent of the profit margin!"

"I don't want your money, Richard," Mason said, stepping back toward the door. "I’m going to take your company, your reputation, your freedom, and your legacy. By the time my children are old enough to read, your name will be nothing more than a footnote in a case study on corporate failure."
