Chapter 10 - The King's Smile

Six months later, summer had arrived in Harbor City.

The grounds of the Kane estate were filled with blooming red roses, lush green lawns, and the sound of soft ocean breezes coming off the bay.

Over three hundred guests had gathered on the manicured estate lawn for the wedding of the decade. The city’s political elite, business leaders, dock union representatives, and estate staff sat together beneath a massive white canopy decorated with thousands of white orchids.

At the front of the altar stood Dominic Kane. He wore a crisp black tuxedo, standing tall and proud beside Ethan, who served as his best man. Dominic carried a polished mahogany cane with a silver dragon head, but he stood completely unassisted, his posture rigid and commanding.

The string quartet began to play a soft, beautiful melody.

The grand double doors of the mansion opened.

Walking down the aisle on the arm of Dr. Julian Vance—who had agreed to escort her—was Emma.

She was a vision of breathtaking beauty in a flowing lace wedding dress that swept across the green grass. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant updo, and her face radiated an absolute, glowing happiness.

In the front row, sitting in a comfortable wheelchair with a warm blanket over her knees, was Linda Harper. Beside her stood a specialized nurse, gently holding her hand.

For a brief, miraculous second, Linda’s clouded brown eyes cleared. She looked at her daughter walking down the aisle, then at Dominic standing at the altar, and a soft, knowing smile touched her lips.

“My sweet girl,” Linda whispered softly, her speech clear for the first time in years. “You found him.”

Emma saw her mother, tears of pure happiness glinting in her eyes as she reached the altar.

Dominic stepped forward, taking Emma’s hands into his heavy, strong fingers. He looked into her eyes, his heart overflowing with a peace he had never known in his entire life.

The minister stepped forward, opening his book. “We are gathered here today to join Dominic Kane and Emma Harper in holy matrimony...”

The ceremony was simple, profound, and deeply moving.

When the time came for the vows, Dominic looked directly into Emma’s eyes, his voice echoing clearly across the sunlit lawn.

“Emma,” Dominic said softly. “Two years ago, I thought my life was over. I thought power was about fear, stone walls, and iron control. You showed me that real power is the courage to love, to fight, and to stand back up when the world tears you down. I promise to protect you, to honor you, and to stand beside you for every remaining day of my life.”

Emma held his hands tightly, tears running down her smiling face. “Dominic. You met me when I was broken, exhausted, and losing hope. You gave me safety, respect, and a love that healed every wound I carried. I promise to be your anchor, your home, and your partner in everything we build together.”

The minister smiled, raising his hands. “By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Dominic, you may kiss your bride.”

Dominic didn't use his cane. He stepped forward on his own strength, wrapping his arms around his wife’s waist and lifting her slightly off her feet as he kissed her deeply beneath the white canopy.

The entire crowd erupted into thunderous applause and cheers. Ethan clapped loudly, while Mrs. Caldwell wiped tears from her eyes with a handkerchief in the second row.

Dominic parted from the kiss, looking down at his beautiful wife.

He smiled—a wide, brilliant, radiant smile that lit up his entire face, transforming the dark, dangerous mob boss into a man filled with absolute, unadulterated joy.

He took Emma’s hand, lacing his fingers through hers, and together they walked down the aisle into the warm summer sunlight.

The paralyzed mafia boss who hadn't smiled in two years had finally come home. And the man everyone thought was gone was never going to leave again.
