Chapter 8 - The Chemical Plant

The abandoned Apex Chemical Plant on 8th Street was a sprawling, industrial nightmare of rusted tanks, towering steel pipes, and broken glass.

At twelve-thirty in the morning, the freezing wind howled through the empty structure.

Inside the main processing hall, Emma was zip-tied to a heavy steel chair in the center of a wide concrete floor. Her face was bruised where a mercenary had struck her during the abduction, but her dark eyes were completely clear, burning with fierce, defiant anger.

Standing ten feet away, warming his hands over a flaming oil drum, was Marcus Vance. Four heavily armed mercenaries stood near the perimeter, their assault rifles slung over their shoulders.

“He’s not coming for me, Marcus,” Emma said, her voice sharp and steady in the freezing hall. “He’s smart. He knows this is a trap.”

Marcus turned, letting out a cruel scoff. “Oh, he’s coming, sweetheart. A man like Dominic Kane can afford to lose money, ships, or territory. But he can’t afford to lose the one thing that made him feel like a man again.”

Emma glared at him, refusing to show a single trace of fear.

Suddenly, the heavy double steel doors at the far end of the processing hall were blown inward with a deafening explosion.

A cloud of dust and concrete debris erupted into the air.

Through the heavy smoke, a single black Suburban crashed through the ruined entrance, its high-beam headlights blinding Marcus and his guards.

The Suburban screeched to a halt thirty feet away.

The driver’s door opened. Ethan Ward stepped out, holding a heavy submachine gun, his face covered in blood. But he didn't move forward. He opened the rear passenger door and deployed a heavy steel ramp.

Marcus grinned, drawing a nickel-plated pistol from his coat. “Look at that... the cripple brought his driver.”

From the interior of the Suburban, a man stepped out onto the steel ramp.

He didn't use a ramp for a wheelchair.

He stepped out on his own two feet.

Dominic Kane stood tall in the cold air, wearing his heavy wool coat, his massive shoulders broad and intimidating beneath the flickering industrial lights. In his right hand, he carried a heavy, custom Kimber .45 pistol.

Marcus’s jaw dropped in absolute, unadulterated horror. His eyes nearly burst from his head as he stared at the man he thought was permanently paralyzed.

“No...” Marcus stuttered, backing away two steps, his voice trembling violently. “No... that’s impossible! You... you can’t walk!”

Emma looked up, tears springing to her eyes as she saw Dominic standing tall, six feet two inches of pure, terrifying, unstoppable iron.

Dominic didn't say a word. The pain surging through his legs was intense—a searing fire that threatened to buckle his knees with every step—but his absolute, furious devotion to Emma completely overruled his body’s limitations.

He took a step forward. His boot crunched heavily on the broken glass.

Then another step.

“Kill him!” Marcus screamed frantically to his four guards. “KILL HIM!”

Before the mercenaries could even raise their weapons, Ethan opened fire from behind the Suburban door, his tactical submachine gun shredding two of the guards in a hail of lead.

The third guard raised his rifle toward Emma, trying to take her hostage.

Dominic raised his heavy .45 pistol with terrifying speed. He fired three rapid shots.

The heavy bullets struck the guard directly in the chest, lifting him off his feet and throwing him backward into a rusted chemical tank.

The fourth guard dropped his weapon, threw his hands into the air, and fell to his knees in utter terror.

Marcus Vance was left standing alone near the flaming oil drum, his nickel-plated pistol shaking violently in his trembling hand.

Dominic walked toward him. Every step was deliberate, heavy, and lethal. The king of Harbor City had returned—not as a shadow behind stone walls, but as an absolute god of vengeance.

“Dominic... please!” Marcus wept, stumbling backward until his spine hit a steel pillar. “It was business! Just business! I’ll leave the city! I’ll give you everything!”

Dominic stopped three feet away from him. He looked down at Marcus with cold, terrifying disgust.

“You laid hands on my wife,” Dominic said quietly, his deep voice carrying the absolute finality of a death sentence.

Marcus’s eyes widened in horror. “Wife...?”

Dominic raised his pistol.

A single gunshot echoed through the cavernous chemical plant, cutting through the freezing night wind.

Marcus Vance slumped to the concrete floor, motionless.

Dominic immediately dropped his pistol, his legs finally surrendering to the overwhelming physical exhaustion and agony. He began to fall forward.

“Dominic!” Emma cried out.

Ethan sprinted forward with a pair of shears, cutting the zip-ties around Emma’s wrists.

Emma didn't wait. She dashed across the concrete floor, catching Dominic’s heavy body as he collapsed, sliding down with him to her knees, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.

Dominic lay against her chest, his head resting against her shoulder, his chest heaving as he gasped for air, his hands gripping her waist with ferocious, desperate strength.

“You came,” Emma sobbed softly, pressing her face into his hair, tears streaming down her bruised cheeks. “You walked... you came for me.”

Dominic held her close, his eyes closed, his voice a rough, emotional rasp into her neck. “I will always come for you, Emma. Always.”
