Chapter 9 - The New Reign

Two weeks after the battle at the chemical plant, the first heavy snowstorm of December arrived in Harbor City, coating the streets in a pristine blanket of white.
The news of Marcus Vance’s complete destruction and the sudden, miraculous return of Dominic Kane had sent a shockwave through the tri-state area. The rival factions that had contemplated moving on Dominic’s territory immediately surrendered their claims, falling back into line with absolute, terrified deference.
The king was back on his feet—and he was more dangerous than he had ever been.
Inside the grand estate, the atmosphere was completely transformed.
The dark, gloomy drapes that had covered the windows for two years had been replaced with bright, warm silk. The fireplace in the main hall roared with a warm blaze, and soft classical music drifted through the grand corridors.
In the second-floor study, Dominic stood near the window without a cane, wearing a bespoke charcoal suit. His posture was commanding, his shoulders broad, his dark eyes clear and full of life.
Beside him stood Ethan, holding a leather folder.
“The dock union signed the final twenty-year lease this morning,” Ethan reported, a genuine smile on his face. “The South Side piers are completely secured. And the state prosecutor dropped all inquiries into the incident at 8th Street—they ruled it self-defense against an organized kidnapping syndicate.”
Dominic nodded smoothly. “Good. What about Willow Glen?”
“The acquisition was completed yesterday,” Ethan said. “You are now the sole owner of the facility. Dr. Vance has already assigned three top neuro-geriatric specialists to oversee Linda Harper’s daily care.”
Dominic looked out the window toward the garden. “Make sure she has everything she needs, Ethan. The best room, the best care, forever.”
“Understood, boss,” Ethan bowed slightly, turning to leave. He paused near the door, looking back at Dominic with deep respect. “It’s good to have you back, Dominic.”
“It’s good to be back, Ethan.”
A minute after Ethan left, the study doors opened softly.
Emma walked into the room. She wore an exquisite dark green velvet dress that matched her eyes, her dark hair pinned back in soft waves. She carried no bucket, no cleaning rag, and no apron.
She was no longer the maid. She was the woman who ruled the heart of the king.
Dominic turned around, a soft, genuine smile touching his lips as he looked at her.
“You look breathtaking,” Dominic said softly, taking three deliberate steps across the room to meet her.
Emma walked into his open arms, resting her hands against his broad chest, looking up into his dark, handsome face. “Dr. Vance said you walked for twenty minutes on the parallel bars this morning without stopping.”
“He’s a taskmaster,” Dominic chuckled, wrapping his arms securely around her waist. “He keeps telling me to push through the burn.”
“And what do you tell him?” Emma asked, a teasing sparkle in her eyes.
“I tell him there is a burn,” Dominic whispered, his voice dropping into a deep, tender register. “And that it feels good to feel something again.”
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He snapped it open.
Inside rested a magnificent five-carat oval diamond ring, surrounded by a delicate band of platinum and smaller emeralds that matched her dress.
Emma’s breath hitched, her hand flying to her mouth. “Dominic...”
Dominic took the ring from the box. He didn't drop to one knee—his legs were still healing—but he looked into her eyes with a profound, terrifying sincerity that made her heart stop.
“Six weeks ago,” Dominic said softly, “I was a dead man sitting in a dark room waiting for my life to end. You walked into my study with a cleaning rag, a swollen knee, and enough nerve to tell me to shut up.”
Emma let out a soft, tearful laugh.
“You saved my life, Emma,” Dominic continued, his voice thick with deep emotion. “You gave me back my strength, my purpose, and my heart. I don't want to rule this city alone. I want you beside me. As my wife. As my queen.”
Emma looked at the brilliant diamond, then up into the eyes of the man who had stood up from his iron throne to save her from the dark.
May you like
“Yes,” Emma whispered, her voice overflowing with pure joy. “Yes, Dominic. Absolutely yes.”
Dominic slipped the heavy diamond onto her finger, then pulled her close, pressing his lips against hers in a deep, passionate, life-affirming kiss that echoed through the warm, silent study.
