PART 3: THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

PART 3: THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Marcus stood frozen.

The phone was still pressed against his ear.

The call had ended.

But Daniel’s voice remained.

Alive.

Terrified.

Desperate.

His brother-in-law, the man everyone claimed had died three years ago, had just called him.

And the first thing he did was warn him.

They will come for her.

Marcus looked down at Lily.

The little girl was watching his face carefully.

Like she already knew.

Like she had seen adults lie too many times.

“Is Daddy okay?” she whispered.

Marcus lowered himself.

He tried to smile.

But it was difficult.

“He’s trying to keep you safe.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Is he coming back?”

That question hurt more than anything.

Because Marcus didn’t know.

“I hope so.”

The honesty seemed to comfort her more than a fake promise.

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

“Daddy said you were the only person he trusted.”

Marcus looked toward Sophie.

She was crying.

Because she had heard.

And because she knew what it meant.

Daniel trusted Marcus.

Not his own family.

Not the people who raised him.

Marcus.

The man who had married his sister.

The man who had no reason to be part of this nightmare.

Richard stepped forward.

“Give the girl to us.”

Marcus looked up.

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

Richard’s face hardened.

“This is not your decision.”

Marcus stood.

“Actually, it is.”

The older man laughed.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.”

Marcus stared.

“Then explain.”

Richard looked around.

At the guests.

At the cameras.

At the people watching.

His expression changed.

He lowered his voice.

“Not here.”

Marcus smiled coldly.

“No.”

“Here is exactly where we talk.”

The guests started recording.

Nobody wanted to leave anymore.

Everyone wanted the truth.

Evelyn looked furious.

“You are humiliating this family.”

Marcus looked at Lily.

“A child was locked away.”

He looked back.

“You did that yourself.”

Sophie stepped forward.

“Marcus.”

Her voice was shaking.

“There’s more.”

He looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“Daniel didn’t die.”

Marcus nodded.

“I know.”

Sophie looked shocked.

“He called.”

Her face changed.

“What?”

“He warned me.”

Sophie covered her mouth.

“Then he’s alive.”

“Yes.”

A strange emotion crossed her face.

Relief.

Fear.

Pain.

“My brother…”

She whispered.

“I spent three years believing he was gone.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Tell me everything.”

Sophie hesitated.

Then she started.

“Daniel discovered something.”

“What?”

She looked at her parents.

“They were hiding money.”

Richard immediately interrupted.

“That’s enough.”

Sophie ignored him.

“Not just money.”

“Documents.”

“Accounts.”

“Things my grandfather left behind.”

Marcus frowned.

“An inheritance?”

Sophie nodded.

“My grandfather created a trust.”

“And only certain family members could access it.”

“Daniel found out someone was trying to take control.”

Marcus looked at Lily.

“And she was the key.”

Sophie nodded.

“Yes.”

The room became quiet.

Lily was not a child to them.

She was an obstacle.

A possession.

A way to get power.

Marcus felt disgusted.

“So they hid her.”

Sophie’s silence confirmed it.

Then Lily suddenly spoke.

“My daddy didn’t run away.”

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked down.

“What?”

The little girl’s eyes filled with tears.

“Grandpa said Daddy left because he didn’t love me.”

Her tiny voice cracked.

“But Daddy told me he loved me.”

Marcus knelt.

“Where did your daddy go?”

Lily looked around.

Then whispered:

“He was hurt.”

Marcus froze.

“Hurt?”

She nodded.

“Daddy said if he disappeared…”

“He would come back when it was safe.”

Sophie looked horrified.

“What do you mean hurt?”

Lily pointed toward the old hallway.

“The night they took me…”

Marcus’s blood ran cold.

“They took you?”

Lily nodded.

“Daddy tried to stop them.”

Everyone went silent.

Marcus looked at Richard.

“You kidnapped her.”

Richard’s face changed.

“No.”

But nobody believed him.

Then the lights suddenly flickered.

The mansion went dark.

People screamed.

Marcus immediately picked up Lily.

“Stay with me.”

The emergency lights turned on.

Red.

Dim.

Scary.

Then a voice came from the entrance.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Wet from the rain.

Blood on his shirt.

Older than Marcus remembered.

But unmistakable.

Daniel.

Alive.

Sophie gasped.

“Daniel?”

Her brother looked at her.

His eyes were full of pain.

Then he looked at Marcus.

Then Lily.

The little girl screamed:

“Daddy!”

Marcus lowered her.

She ran.

Daniel dropped to his knees.

He caught her.

Holding her like he would never let go again.

Everyone watched.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked up.

Straight at Richard and Evelyn.

His voice was broken.

“You told my daughter I abandoned her.”

His eyes filled with anger.

“You locked her away.”

Evelyn stepped back.

“Daniel…”

He stood slowly.

“You took my life.”

“You took my daughter.”

“You made everyone believe I was dead.”

A pause.

“And you still think you won?”

Richard’s face changed.

Because Daniel wasn’t alone.

Behind him…

Police officers entered.

Marcus looked surprised.

Daniel nodded.

“I recorded everything.”

He looked at Marcus.

“I knew they would try to erase the truth.”

Marcus understood.

Daniel had been planning this.

Waiting.

Surviving.

For Lily.

Then one officer walked forward.

“Richard and Evelyn Carter?”

The room went silent.

“You are under arrest.”

For the first time that night…

The people who controlled everything looked afraid.

But before anyone moved…

Evelyn smiled.

A cold, confident smile.

Because she knew something they didn’t.

She looked at Daniel.

“You think this is over?”

Daniel stared.

She whispered:

“You still don’t know who helped me disappear.”

Marcus felt a chill.

May you like

Because everyone looked at Sophie.

And Sophie’s face went white.
