PART 6: THE CHILD WHO WASN'T SUPPOSED TO EXIST

PART 6: THE CHILD WHO WASN'T SUPPOSED TO EXIST
Nobody spoke.
The paper shook slightly in Maria’s hand.
The words on the DNA report felt louder than any scream.
THE CHILD IS NOT A CARTER.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Then at Lily’s room.
Then back at Maria.
“No.”
Daniel’s voice was barely audible.
“That’s impossible.”
Maria smiled.
“Is it?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You’re lying.”
“Am I?”
She held up the document.
“Your family spent years hiding the truth.”
“Why would I need to?”
Daniel grabbed the paper.
His eyes moved across the lines.
His face slowly changed.
Confusion.
Fear.
Pain.
Marcus watched him.
Because for the first time…
Daniel looked completely lost.
“What does it say?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Marcus took the document.
And read.
The test showed Lily was not biologically related to the Carter family.
Not to Daniel.
Not to Richard.
Not to Evelyn.
The room spun.
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He repeated it like saying it enough times would change reality.
Marcus looked at Maria.
“Where did you get this?”
Maria didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“From the person who created it.”
“Who?”
She smiled.
“Your wife.”
Everyone froze.
Marcus turned.
“Sophie?”
Maria nodded.
“No one asked why she was so quiet.”
“Why she protected certain secrets.”
“Why she always knew where to look.”
Marcus felt a wave of anger.
Not again.
Not another secret.
He walked upstairs.
“Sophie!”
His voice echoed.
She appeared at the top of the stairs.
She saw the faces.
The document.
And immediately understood.
Her expression collapsed.
“Marcus…”
“Tell me she’s lying.”
Sophie looked at Lily’s room.
Then closed her eyes.
“I can explain.”
Marcus felt betrayed all over again.
“Everyone says that.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Sophie.”
His voice was broken.
“Is Lily my daughter?”
Sophie looked at him.
And the answer came slowly.
“No.”
Daniel looked like someone had hit him.
“No…”
Sophie cried.
“I’m sorry.”
“Then whose child is she?”
Nobody moved.
Sophie whispered:
“I don’t know.”
Marcus stared.
“You don’t know?”
She shook her head.
“I found out before the fire.”
“I found the records.”
“I knew something was wrong.”
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“And you still let me believe she was mine?”
Sophie cried harder.
“I didn’t know what to believe.”
Maria laughed softly.
“Of course.”
“Everyone always has an excuse.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Then why bring this here?”
Maria’s smile disappeared.
“Because the truth matters.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
“You don’t care about truth.”
“You want something.”
Maria looked at Lily.
“Yes.”
“The child.”
“Why?”
Maria was silent.
Then said:
“Because she carries something.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Maria opened another file.
Inside was an old medical report.
“Before the fire, Daniel discovered a secret.”
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Daniel slowly shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Maria continued:
“The child was part of a hidden project.”
Sophie looked horrified.
“A project?”
“Yes.”
Maria’s eyes darkened.
“Your grandfather was obsessed with bloodlines.”
“He believed certain traits could be preserved.”
Marcus felt sick.
“You’re saying…”
Maria nodded.
“Lily was not an accident.”
“She was created.”
The words felt impossible.
Daniel stepped back.
“No.”
Maria looked at him.
“You think you were protecting a daughter.”
“But you were protecting something much bigger.”
Marcus looked toward Lily.
The little girl sleeping peacefully.
Unaware of the world fighting over her.
“She’s a child.”
His voice was firm.
“Not a thing.”
Maria looked at him.
For the first time…
She seemed uncertain.
Then suddenly—
A sound came from outside.
Cars.
Again.
Everyone froze.
Daniel moved to the window.
His face went pale.
“No.”
Marcus looked.
“What?”
Daniel whispered:
“He found us.”
The lights outside turned on.
A convoy of black vehicles surrounded the house.
The same symbol appeared on every door.
A symbol Marcus had never seen before.
Except Lily.
The little girl woke up.
She walked to the window.
And the moment she saw the symbol…
She started shaking.
“No…”
Marcus immediately picked her up.
“Lily?”
She buried her face into his chest.
“Don’t let him take me.”
Marcus held her tighter.
“Who?”
The little girl whispered:
“The man from the room.”
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at her.
“What man?”
Lily cried.
“The man who came when Daddy was gone.”
Marcus felt cold.
“Who was he?”
The little girl looked toward the door.
And whispered:
“Grandpa.”
Silence.
Because everyone knew.
Richard was in custody.
Evelyn was arrested.
So who was she talking about?
Then the front door opened.
Slowly.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Calm.
Powerful.
Everyone recognized him.
Because his photo was in the old family records.
A man who had been declared dead fifteen years ago.
The founder.
Lily’s supposed grandfather.
Marcus whispered:
“No…”

The man smiled.
“I see my granddaughter is finally awake.”
