PART 4: THE SECRET SOPHIE HID

PART 4: THE SECRET SOPHIE HID

Everyone looked at Sophie.

The accusation hung in the air.

Heavy.

Impossible.

Marcus stared at his wife.

The woman he had loved.

The woman who had cried when she thought her brother was dead.

The woman who claimed she knew nothing.

But her face told a different story.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Sophie.”

His voice was quiet.

“What did she mean?”

Sophie didn’t answer.

Daniel slowly stood.

His eyes moved between his sister and Evelyn.

“No.”

He whispered.

“That can’t be true.”

Evelyn smiled.

The same cold smile that had terrified Marcus earlier.

“You really thought she was innocent?”

Sophie stepped back.

“Stop.”

But Evelyn continued.

“She knew.”

“She knew Daniel was alive.”

“She knew Lily was here.”

“She knew everything.”

Marcus felt something break inside him.

He turned to Sophie.

“Is that true?”

Sophie’s eyes filled.

“Marcus…”

“Answer me.”

The room was silent.

Even Daniel looked at her.

Waiting.

Sophie closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Yes.”

The word destroyed everything.

Marcus stepped back.

Lily was still holding Daniel’s hand.

The little girl looked between the adults.

Confused.

Scared.

Sophie cried.

“I didn’t want this.”

Marcus laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“You knew.”

“I spent three years thinking your family destroyed your brother.”

“You let me believe there was no secret.”

She shook her head.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

Sophie looked at Evelyn.

“Of them.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Explain.”

Sophie looked at her brother.

“I found you after the accident.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“I found you.”

“You were injured.”

“Barely alive.”

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew he survived.”

Sophie nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s face filled with disbelief.

“Then why didn’t you help me?”

Tears ran down Sophie’s face.

“Because Dad was watching.”

Richard looked away.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“You’re blaming him?”

Sophie shook her head.

“No.”

“I’m blaming myself.”

She looked at Lily.

“I thought I could protect you.”

The little girl stared at her.

“Protect me?”

Sophie broke.

“Yes.”

“I was trying to find a way out.”

“But I failed.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“You left my daughter alone.”

“No.”

Sophie cried.

“I didn’t know where they moved her.”

“I spent years looking.”

Marcus stared.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Sophie had no answer.

That silence hurt more.

Because it meant she chose secrecy.

Again.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“What happened after?”

Evelyn’s face remained calm.

She had lost the room.

But she wasn’t broken.

“You all still don’t understand.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Understand what?”

She smiled.

“This family was built on lies.”

“And everyone here has blood on their hands.”

A police officer stepped forward.

“That’s enough.”

But Evelyn ignored him.

She looked at Daniel.

“You think you’re the victim?”

She laughed.

“You’re not.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“Ask him.”

Everyone turned.

To Daniel.

Marcus felt a chill.

“What is she talking about?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

His expression changed.

Like he was afraid.

“Daniel?”

Marcus’s voice sharpened.

“What are you hiding?”

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at Marcus.

Finally he said:

“I never planned to come back.”

Silence.

Sophie looked shocked.

“Daniel…”

He swallowed.

“I stayed away because I was guilty.”

Marcus stared.

“Guilty of what?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“The night of the fire…”

A pause.

“I was there.”

Sophie stepped back.

“No.”

Daniel continued.

“I wasn’t the victim.”

“I was investigating.”

“I found the documents.”

“I found out someone was planning to steal the inheritance.”

Marcus listened carefully.

“So?”

Daniel’s face filled with regret.

“So I confronted them.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked at Richard.

The answer was clear.

But then he said something worse.

“I fought with him.”

Richard’s expression changed.

Daniel continued:

“The fire started after that.”

Marcus felt cold.

“Are you saying…”

Daniel looked down.

“I caused it.”

Nobody spoke.

Sophie covered her mouth.

“No.”

“I didn’t mean to.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I was angry.”

“I thought I could force the truth out.”

“But the fire spread.”

“I tried to save everyone.”

“Then I got hurt.”

“And when I woke up…”

He looked at Lily.

“I saw what they did.”

Marcus looked at him.

“What did they do?”

Daniel’s voice became a whisper.

“They took my daughter.”

The room went silent.

The truth was no longer simple.

Nobody was innocent.

Not even the people who suffered.

Then Marcus’s phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

And froze.

A photo.

Taken minutes ago.

His house.

His children.

His front door.

Below the image was one sentence.

YOU FOUND LILY.

NOW WE TAKE WHAT IS LEFT.

Marcus looked up.

His face changed.

May you like

Because the threat wasn’t coming from the past.

It was coming for them now.
