Chapter 1 - The Laughter in the Shadows

The puppy tore into the one room nobody in the entire Bellgrave estate was allowed to enter.
Marin Holloway didn’t hesitate. She chased him anyway.
“Bruno, no!” she gasped, her voice echoing down the pristine, marble-lined corridor of the west wing.
Two heavy-set bodyguards instantly reached beneath their sharp dark jackets as the plus-size temporary maid burst into Dominic Castellano’s private office. Her soft-featured face was flushed a deep pink, her dark curls bouncing wild against her collarbone. She lunged frantically after the golden retriever pup—and in her sheer desperation, her foot caught the edge of the plush Persian rug.
She tumbled forward in an awkward, breathless heap, sliding straight over the polished mahogany hardwood, and somehow landed square in the massive leather armchair belonging to the most feared mafia boss in Bellgrave.
In the chaos, Dominic Castellano’s thin, designer reading glasses knocked off the edge of his desk, falling neatly onto the bridge of Marin’s nose.
Silence swallowed the room whole.
The air sucked out of the office instantly, leaving a suffocating, freezing stillness. The two guards stood frozen, their hands planted firmly against the grips of their holstered firearms. Beside the towering arched window, the estate manager, Victoria Sloan, stopped mid-sentence, her face draining of all color.
Marin sat frozen in the throne of the city's undisputed underworld king, staring through his prescription lenses at the tiny puppy currently gnawing happily on the tassels of her denim maid's apron.
She slowly adjusted the crooked glasses on her face, meeting the pup's innocent hazel eyes.
“You are impossible,” she whispered, her rich, melodic voice breaking the dead quiet.
And then, Dominic Castellano laughed.
It wasn't a cold, dismissive smirk. It wasn't a dry, cynical chuckle.
It was a deep, chest-rumbling, genuine laugh that echoed off the high frescoed ceilings and shook the heavy velvet drapes.
The senior secretary looked stunned. One of the hardened syndicate guards actually stared, his jaw dropping half an inch. Because as everyone in the state knew, Dominic Castellano hadn’t laughed like that in over six years—not since the brutal, bloody turf war that had claimed his father's life and crowned him as the ruthless, unyielding head of the Castellano syndicate.
Dominic leaned back against the edge of his massive desk, his slate-grey eyes crinkling at the corners, his broad shoulders shaking slightly as he took in the sight of the plush, soft-bodied maid wearing his glasses while sitting in his chair.
Marin slowly removed the expensive reading glasses, holding them out with a trembling hand, her cheeks burning like hot coals.
“I assume this is the part where I update my résumé,” she said softly, her dark brown eyes sparkling with a mix of raw embarrassment and irrepressible, dry humor.
She expected to be dragged out by her arms. She expected to be fired on the spot.
Instead, Dominic stepped forward, his massive six-foot-three frame casting a long, warm shadow over her. He reached down, his long, scarred fingers gently taking the glasses from her hand.
“What is your name?” he asked, his voice a deep, velvety rasp that sent a strange, electric shiver straight down Marin's spine.
“Marin,” she breathed, trying to gather her bulky apron as she scrambled out of the chair. “Marin Holloway.”

That was all it took.
Within days, the subtle climate of the Castellano mansion began to shift. People began noticing that Dominic—a man who usually demanded utter silence during his morning routines—remembered her witty coffee jokes. They noticed that he intentionally entered rooms he normally avoided simply because Marin was in there dusting the antique glass cases. And when she teased him about his terrible habit of working past 2:00 AM, the most intimidating, lethal man in Bellgrave actually smiled.
