Chapter 3 - The Cold Silence

Dominic Castellano noticed the change immediately.

He was a man trained to spot the subtle shifts in human behavior; it was the primary reason he was still alive in the cutthroat world of the syndicate.

The next morning, the sky over Bellgrave was heavy with grey storm clouds. Dominic sat in the sunlit breakfast room, reviewing land deeds on his tablet, when the doors swung open.

Marin walked in carrying his morning silver tray.

Her dark curls were pulled back into a tight, sensible bun. Her apron was crisp, her posture rigid. The bright, playful warmth that usually lit up her dark eyes was entirely gone, replaced by a smooth, professional mask of total detachment.

She set his espresso down on the linen tablecloth without making eye contact.

“Thank you,” Dominic said, his deep voice breaking the morning quiet.

“You’re welcome, Mr. Castellano,” Marin replied formally, taking a step back, her hands folded neatly in front of her apron.

Dominic’s grey eyes lifted sharply from his screen. His brow furrowed.

“Mr. Castellano?” he repeated smoothly.

Normally, she would have poked fun at his formal title, calling him 'Your High and Mighty Lordship' with a wicked little wink that brightened his entire day.

She didn’t.

“Is there anything else you require for breakfast, sir?” she asked, her voice flat, emotionless, and cold.

Dominic lowered his tablet completely. He looked around the large breakfast room. Three junior staff members—two housemaids and a butler—were polishing silver at the sideboard, their ears subtly angled toward the table, pretending not to watch the interaction.

Dominic’s expression changed. The warm, relaxed look on his face hardened into something dark, sharp, and terrifyingly cold.

“No,” Dominic whispered softly, his slate eyes fixed on Marin’s downcast face. “That will be all, Miss Holloway.”

Marin bowed her head slightly and turned, exiting the room with quick, quiet steps.

That afternoon, Dominic found his head of security, Matteo, standing near the grand west staircase, reviewing patrol schedules.

“Matteo,” Dominic called out, his voice a low rumble that made the veteran guard instantly snap to attention.

“Yes, Don Castellano?”

Dominic leaned against the mahogany railing, his dark eyes burning with a dangerous, subterranean heat.

“Has something happened with Miss Holloway?”

Matteo hesitated for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward the hallway where the staff quarters lay. He knew better than to lie to Dominic, but he also knew the dangerous political waters of the mansion.

“There has been... talk, boss,” Matteo admitted carefully.

Dominic went perfectly still. His broad shoulders squared, his hands rolling into tight fists at his sides.

“What kind of talk?” Dominic asked, his voice dropping into a register that made the security chief’s skin crawl with instinctual dread.
